If you really want to have some fun and learn about guns. Buy a black powder pistol. These guns have to be loaded manually. Meaning that you measure and pour in the powder and then seat the ball (bullet). Install the cap and fire. It teaches you allot about how the gun operates and how the amount of powder affects the shooting.

It also makes allot of smoke which is pretty cool. :D :P

No matter what gun you use, make sure you follow all safety rules.

Always treat a gun as if it's loaded. Even if you know it isn't.

A few weeks ago I went out to range day for the Sheriff's Deptartment that I work for. The deputies carry Glock .40s, so that is what I shot. We did different shooting scenarios, and it was a blast. We fired at targets from behind obstacles, did some moving around, and also did a stand off situation with a baddy holding a gun, but not aiming it at you. When they told us to start yelling commands to "drop the gun," I noticed a little bit of excitement and adrenaline start running. It was enjoyable, and I shot pretty decent for my second time out.

The actual firing of a gun that's not exceptionally large is relatively uneventful. You'll need the same sort of focus and such that you would use with a bow. Unless it's something like a .22 or .410 shotgun, however, it is worth noting that the noise in unreal. The gun noises you hear in movies are like the tiny "bip bip bip" of some old video games in comparison; any decently sized gun is very likely going to be the single loudest noise you hear over the course of your life.

Scary. The first gun (and so far only gun) I've ever fired was an M16 A1 rifle during my ROTC marksmanship training. First time, I was trembling and sweating heavily. I was afraid to make mistakes as it can be fatal (and with members of the army watching) . I remembered my basic training with wooden rifles though, and I drew strenght from that. Thank God, it went well. =)
