Has anyone ever learned the Rape Escape system? https://www.rapeescape.com They seem to think they are offering something different than other women's self-defense courses. But, there are no nearby classes, and the CD set is $100.

I got into martial arts to learn self-defense, so when I read about Rape Escape it really caught my eye. I am one of those gals who tends to get targeted. (It must be something about how I carry myself, I guess.) And I would be interested in learning a street-fighting self-defense system even while I am moving through the ranks of my MA system.

Does anyone have any inside information on Rape Escape or any other women's self-defense systems?

I think the problem with many women's self-defense courses is that they take a 2-4 hour training course and think they are good to go.

IMO, you can learn the basics (the most important part) of self defense in that time, but:

1. It's USELESS if the trainee does not have the right mindset. It's amazing how hard it is sometimes to get a woman to choke you or inflict pain. (I'm referring to being an instructor asking a studnet to perform certain techniques)

2. Skills, no matter how basic, need to be maintained. You must train a couple times a month at the very least or you will decline quickly.

3. Most self-defense classes don't teach women what it feels like to be hit, choked, etc.

I'm with sub grap on the BJJ programs for the reasons stated on their site.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Spirit At Choice: If you're being frequently targeted, then I suggest (I am in no way being facetious) that you carry a stungun. I am uncertain as to the legality of this particular weapon in certain states, so this may not be a viable option; but it's certainly more practical than martial arts. When it's your body on the line, always go for the surest bet. Weapons are much more efficient than fists or kicks.

I appreciate the idea, but I don't think a stun gun is the answer for me. Believe me, I have thought about carrying something, but it seems entirely impractical for a number of reasons:

1) I am VERY busy, and would soon tire of having it 'at the ready'

2) I am afraid it would be turned against me

3) I am concerned my kids would find it and hurt themselves

I stongly believe that I am targeted because of how I carry myself. I have been abused since the age of 4. As an adult I have been in two abusive relationships, and been targeted by 'bad guys' easily half a dozen times (everything from a purse snatching to a guy who meant me clear physical harm).

I think the answer to my concerns is to get confident, walk with my head up, and be able to look people in the eye. I just never learned that. That sort of posture/attitude is foreign to me. But, I can learn it. One of the senseis at my dojo is a woman. She is at times my drill seargent and at times my sister.

Mace or a stun gun might be good for high-risk moments, if I can anticipate them. But as a viable permanent solution, I just don't have confidence in them.

I agree about weapons- they are good if you get to practice them often, but if not, its just really risky that the attacker will take it away and use it.

Weapons are not magic wands to make bad things go away. Like anything else, they require time and training.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!
