lordtariel
I have a question about the different types of wood out there? Is there a noticeable difference between white oak and red oak? What about Oak vs. Ash? What's your preferred material for a bo? I went searching and found a link in a couple posts that seemed like it would give me the info I needed but the link was broken. karatekid1975
I have a bamboo bo. I don't know if it's REAL bamboo, but it's very durable (sp?), and can handle hard hitting during bo drills with partners. It's the only one I ever owned. So maybe others can help you with the wooden ones. Laurie F
isshinryu5toforever
I'm guessing you have a rattan bo. Bamboo isn't really a bo for hard contact, it would be for show. As far as woods go, you are looking at oak and ash. Both are decent, but can have a tendency to warp. Japanese oak is a different story. That wood grows in a much colder climate, which in turn makes the grain of the wood much tighter. People who can handle the extra weigh sometimes opt for a bo made of an exotic hardwood like Jabota. karatekid1975
Can a rattan bo LOOK like bamboo or shaped like it? It must be made of something else, then. It's pretty heavy, and it takes a good beating. Just curious. Laurie F
isshinryu5toforever
Rattan is light. I suppose it's possible that it is made of bamboo, but all bamboo bos I have seen are hollow and not meant for hard contact. He who knows others is wise. karatekid1975
No, this one isn't hollow. It's solid. Maybe it is bamboo but it's filled with something. I can't really tell. But thanks for answering Laurie F
fylcon
I use a Ash bo....it's light enough to work with and solid enough for sparing.
marie curie
I used to use a red oak bow- I liked it to practice with ( a little heavy), and use like rattan or something in competition.
