Son Goku the monkeyking Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Wow, that guy is a disgrace to any martial art. I almost laughed but I relised that this is another example of the reason why the public is losing respect for certain martial arts. Who can blame them with guys like this walking around in a gi which is meant for training, he obviously had a messed up view of what Karate is. Thanks for posting that though, interesting and original.i heard dat, the only time i ever am in my unifrom is when i just came from a tournament, going to a tournament, or just got out of class, and even the i dont like going to many places were i have to do alot of walking or people have to see me. One of the first rules about martial arts is never go around telling everyone u no it or trying to show of ur uniform, there is always someone better, and the more u fight, tell people about ur martial arts or showoff the faster u will meet that person. or it might just be thAt u will end up in a bad situation, end up getting hurt no matter how good u are . oviouslythis man was very idiotic. and has just given MA a a bad name, aswell as been given his own plate of humiliation.i bet know he will were normal clothes like everyone else and stop showin of.

Spirit At Choice Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I don't think it's about "not telling anyone" you do martial arts, I think it's about not telling EVERYONE you do martial arts. When I started, I was so excited; it's all I wanted to talk about. I sure got a mix of reactions. Enough to let me know that I don't tell people I study martial arts any more than I tell people I design web sites. If it comes up, it comes up. If it doesn't, I don't menion it. White belt mind. Black belt heart....Rejoice and be glad!
Sensei Rick Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I have seen too many people in my area wearing a black belt outside of their school. It gets pointed ouot to me and then I look, and what do I see. ATA. always! Not once was it from another orginization. The gi is easy to spot. They have those Big letters on the back. I was kinda glad to hear this idiot wasn't an ATA student................Oh, and i'm not in the ATA orginiation.....Aren't we kinda pointing the finger at the wrong person. Myagi say, " no such thing as bad student, only bad teacher. teacher say, student do". I wanna call this guys school and yell at the teacher. I wonder how this guy relayed the story in his dojo the next day. place clever martial arts phrase here
KF Dude Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Sounds like this guy was looking for trouble & found it when he least expected it. It's doubtful but you can only hope he will learn from this.
Fairfax_Uechi Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Sounds like this guy never learned about life in the big city. There is always someone bigger, faster, or just plain luckier than you around. In other words like folks said, no point in looking for trouble. And this guy was asking for it by advertising that he was a black belt.Like others, I don't normally wear my gi out in public. The exception is when I come home after a tough class, or if I have a real reason for chaning at home, such as dropping the kids of someplace and won't have time to change at the dojo.I have been told that in Okaniwana that black belts are discouranged from wearing their belts in public. Especially the higher ranking seniors as it is common to have folks start fights to see how tough they are.

TKD Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 What do ya'll think aobut wearing a shirt or jacket with your schools logo on it. Not the big ATA thing but just a 3-5 inch circle with the schools name.

Not the big ATA thing but just a 3-5 inch circle with the schools name.I have a sweatshirt with my school's logo on it. I guess if someone read it they would know I practice karate, but I'm a little older so trouble isn't going to sniff me out they way it might find a teenager.
Fairfax_Uechi Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 What do ya'll think aobut wearing a shirt or jacket with your schools logo on it. Not the big ATA thing but just a 3-5 inch circle with the schools name.I have shirts and jackets with the Uechi crest on them and the dojo's web site along with the name of the dojo. Very understated. If someone is close enough to read it, then we're close enough to have a conversation. If not, then it's not an issue. Also, I'm older also, so just like usc96 it's not like I'm hanging out with a bunch of teenagers, or going places where a crest or name is going to cause an issue.
