MiccyNarc Posted January 31, 2006 Author Posted January 31, 2006 In the past yes.How do you think it compares to the other styles you have trained in?

stoneheart Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 I used to study it, until I moved away from my dojo. I still practice all the kata and stances when I can. It's a powerful style with deep meaning and bunkai. I highly recommend it as a traditional martial art.
GojuGal Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 I do, yes. I've been taking it for over a year now, not long, I know. I'm an orange belt, and I'm hoping to test for my green this spring. I'll have to wait and see though, if I progress enough. If not, then I'll test in the fall, no biggie either way.
shogeri Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 When I step back and approach the many other methods of fighting, I believe it blends well with those that employ close-in fighting, and works well in the defense of many of those that use distance weapons as well, such as staffs or legs. It also works well with those who enjoy to kick as well, since many of the higher kata can be modified to kick higher {or lower}...There are many knees and elbows, and many heel-palm strikes, and strike downs and so on.I wouldn't trade my past for anything, save perhaps for more jujutsu, grappling, and Taijiquan and or wing chun or Chi Na training. gimmik_3 Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 I've been studying it for about a year and a half after some reservations at the beginning I'm really getting into it.stoneheart: It's a powerful style with deep meaning and bunkai. RichardHangHong Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 I trained in a Goju/Shotokan mixed style for about nearly 10 years. Now I run my own club and also train in seperate Goju Ryu and Shotokan clubs. My Goju Ryu instructor is Sensei George Andrews, 7th Dan - OTGKA/IOGKF.Goju Ryu is very good for close quarter combat and the katas are both powerful and yet graceful.
