i got outta taekwondo cuz of kata....all we ever did was kata and i never learned how to fight

i truly started to learn how to fight when i began kickboxing and jiu jitsu.....

kata did nothing for me.......we do go through traditional stepping in jiu jitsu but other then that it is strictly joint manipulations and grappling in jiu jitsu and in kickboxing its drills, bag work, conditioning and sparring

i cant say that that kata has helped me in any of those areas redbutt!

You can boo me if you want, You know I'm right!

People often look at kata and try to copy the moves exactly from the kata. What they don't also realise is that Kata is like a set of notes. You can always expand on them, even if it doesn't follow the kata. This is why some people always find kata too structured, you can always expand on any technique you do.

Karate is not about fighting.

You need to watch Karate Kid. There are many good lessons in those movies.

Karate is a way of life. Karate is about not having to fight.

Sure we do punches and kicks but a person who understands karate knows that fighting is only a small part of karate.

That' true, actually not just Karate but all MA is not about fighting

"I THINK KATA IS USELESS BECAUSE THE STEPPING MOVEMENTS THAT ARE ENTAILED WITH THE PUNCHING AND KICKING ARE NOT PRACTICAL TO WHAT HAPPENS IN A REAL STREET FIGHT "

Next time before you spar stat stepping arrudn like your doing a kata it freaks people out. LOL. Espically lower ranks. LOL. Nice distraction.

Kata teaching timming and works on focus of the punch and kick which makes a big deal when fighting.

Kata will be a boring waste of time... if you don't focus on it and pay attention to it. All of the greats like Funakoshi and Oyama practiced Kata more than anything else. If you practice it seriously, as if every move you perform is to save your life, you will be building not only speed, balance, etc, but you will also be instilling a true martial determination and discipline.

well look at it this way..All the great past karateka such as Funakoshi, Oyama, Masturma, Nakayama, Kanazawa, etc. all trained with kata as thier base. Of course they did sparring (pre-arranged and bunkai). It wasnt until after Funakoshi's death that sparring became a principal method to train(At least in the J.K.A.). Basically its like this, all the great masters did kata and thats why they are masters. Now i ask you. If kata "sucks" then why did they do it. Why not fight all the time? Why does every ancient fighting style dating back to Africa has some tpye of kata? Maybe there is something to it? And dont give the standered answer that "its to pass on knowledge" which it is, but theres more............

If you develope decent meditation skills, it is not enough to keep those skills simple while sitting. You need to work on your kata, and when the kata is good enough, you start meditation in movement through performing the kata. Then you can move onto performing basics and combinations in a state of "meditation", and then sparring. Sparring with such training makes you very sensitive to the other's movements and really changes your mindset to focus only on your opponent allowing you to dominate him completely.

Well, prodigy, looks like my post still stands on its own. I said if you hate Kata, find a new Martial art...you did. I said that it taks a LONG time to understand it (read...lifetime), you didn't wait that long.

I'm not bashing you here, just pointing out that what I said is true. Understanding Kata is NOT easy...it take lots of work and time...lots of time. If you put in the effort, you will understand what the Kata has to offer.

Thankfully, there are many Martial Arts out there with different teaching mechanisms. You've found ones that work for you and that is great! But, it is unfair to say that Kata is pointless. It would be fair to say (and you did), that you didn't LEARN anything from it. There is a reason that Kata has been passed on through the years...it's not just traditional.
