RichardHangHong
Ha ha! Cheers HR,I heard it was a good class, my girlfriend Caroline (the curly haired blonde black belt) was there as well as some of my students (2 green belts and a blue belt) and she was also at the private class, she told me all about it.I can't go to Shihan's seminar this weekend either because I am moving to Wickford on Saturday.Which dojo do you train at? I'm at Basildon on Wednesday nights. It's easy to recognise me, I'm the only one with a badge that's not Tokon Kai. RichardHangHong
Ah yes! I remember us working on gyaku tsuki together, keeping the elbow tucked in, twisting the hips, etc. Is it improving? Hidden_Ronin
I think so, yes. I saw a video of me practicing as a white belt alittle while ago, its definatly come along since then. its getting used to "Pushing" from the hips that takes awhile, but I guess it wouldn't be as kool if it was easy. BarbedTerror
I train with GKR and I personally believe it to be fantastic. They teach you practical was to defend yourself. I don't understand all of the criticism GKR gets, it is a great style and is not as expensive as other styles, in fact I believe it to be quite, which makes me wonder why people refer to it as a "Mcdojo"All that matters is if you enjoy the style/club you are with and feel as though you are learning. UNLESS you have trained in real Shotokan or Real Goju Ryu Karate, then, and only then, can you compare it. I find the quality is never as good as the original styles than GKR is taken from. Compare this to having a dentist, one cheap, didn't finish his degree and a dearer one who finished his degree - YOU WOULD pick the cheaper one then! The main issue people have with GKR is that many of your instructors are not black belt and instead wear a black and white belt and have little experience. These people are working for little or nothing. Money is filtered up through a hierarchy. Having said that I also know of decent people in GKR who are just as passionate about their karate as I am. etali
A GKR student came over to the karate school I train at. Her forms are quite neat, and she looks good in line work, but she says that she never really did any pad work at her old school, and it shows. She's not comfortable holding the pad, and she tends to either hit very gently, or to hit with her fist angled poorly, so she ends up hurting herself. She also seems incapable of making contact in sparring (she's fast enough, she just stops several inches out).I don't know whether that's just her, or whether the way she does karate represents GKR in general (or even just her school), but based on what I've seen it looks like GKR teaches forms well, but doesn't do enough pad work or sparring to ensure that the students can apply the stuff they're teaching safely and effectively in the real world. andym
She also seems incapable of making contact in sparring. etali ask's GKR, claims to be NONE CONTACT Karate. To my mind , a contradiction in terms to me. A GKR is not a 'style' , it is a sales organisation and she shouldn't be visiting other clubs ! It's against their rules / contract - get the picture If you believe in an ideal. You don't own it ; it owns you.
