For all that I love about Wing Chun.. the footwork is NOT on the list. I don't like how you drag your foot on the ground.. if you're in a yard and have running shoes on... the turning step and zig zag steps KILL your knees. I know this cuz I near ruined my knee the other night doing a turning punch. Am I just doing this wrong or what?

lol it is. I got corrected for picking my foot up off the ground. not as much the drag of moving... it's the pivot of the turning punch and whatnot.

The foot work that I teach is very effective. It has it's basis in TKD. I beleive that it's important to land in a firhgting stance as quickly as possible after an attack so that you can do a follow up if needed. It's foundation is for the olympic TKD I think, but it worlks well in street fighting as well. I Don't know a web site for it but i'm sure a google search will help you. Weaight distribution is going to be great debate, but i use front leg. that is,,,,,,,, most my weight is on my front leg. Good luck.

if you are talking of how most tae kwon do practitioners sparr (with one side to the opponent), I wouldnt put all of my weight on my front leg unless I wanted my attacker to break my knee.

but, hey, we all have our style, right?

WC however, has a completely different stance, in which the torso( in WC center) must point in the direction of the attacher always to provide full energy output(or strenght) against the opponent.

In just about any martial art, stuff like formal stances and flashy moves, things like whirling blocks, may not be able to be exactly done, especially if in a fight or in rough terrain.

The ability to adapt and improvise is crucial!

If you can't drag it lift it.

Well forms are used to show princples and when you practice them you perform them in the proper form, however in a fight you can modify them to fit your needs.

Stonecrusher69 you are right on point. Well Said.

During forms practice you strive to perfect body mechcanics, principles & philosophy of the style. The only objective in fighting is to survive. If you have trained correctly you will realize that relying on your chosen martial art is the best means to insure your survival of the conflict.

There is a similar footwork debate in Hung-Ga in the proper use of horse stance while fighting.
