Magical Goose Posted April 6, 2002 Posted April 6, 2002 Hey guys, I've been having some occuring problems when I'm punching mainly with my left hand... I have very little power and dexterity I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on getting a harder punch.... I'm not gettin any points!!! Trying is the first step to failure, and its usually not worth it.
Jack Posted April 6, 2002 Posted April 6, 2002 Hmmm... not much but just one little tip which somehow seems to help with power in strikes is to imagine striking through your target as if you are aiming for something behind it. JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
Magical Goose Posted April 6, 2002 Author Posted April 6, 2002 K, I'll try that. Is there any kid of excercises I could try to increase power? Trying is the first step to failure, and its usually not worth it.
SaiFightsMS Posted April 6, 2002 Posted April 6, 2002 Practice and more practice. One does not instantly have great power. It comes to gradually to really measure in most case. The more you do and the more you practice the better it gets. It is a process that goes on over time. Like years.
koreantiger81 Posted April 6, 2002 Posted April 6, 2002 what kind of left punch? HOok? jap? Front punch or back punch? well, when punching you have to keep in mind it's not just the arms that do the work. You have to use your hips and shift your body weight. For example, Ken Griffey Jr. doesn't just use his arm muscles to hit a home run. He uses his full body. His arms are cranked back and his weight is on his back foot. When he wants to hit the ball, he transfers his weight forward. LIkewise, with punches, you have to be aware of your "weight transfer" and how to generate torque. Shift your weight into your target. It's hard to explain in words. If only i could show you in person! Kinesiologist/TrainerBlack-Belt
Magical Goose Posted April 7, 2002 Author Posted April 7, 2002 Mainly jabs and hooks. Ya, I've read all about having your hips behind your punches, I can visualize it, but I cant really use it you know. At my Do Jang we havent done to much with punching and I havent really received to much formal training in this aspect, but when I actually have to throw a punch.... Trying is the first step to failure, and its usually not worth it.
Pacificshore Posted April 7, 2002 Posted April 7, 2002 Magical Goose, If your talking jabs and hooks, then realize that a jab is more of a quick punch not really a power punch. It's like flicking your hand out and back, only now your hand is closed!! The hook punch I see as a power punch, but you have to develop a torquing motion with the upper and lower body. This motion places everything from your arm, shoulder, hip and leg behind the punch!! Hope this is of some help Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
Magical Goose Posted April 7, 2002 Author Posted April 7, 2002 so rather than focusing on power I should try for speed? hmmm ok. Are there any excercises or type of weight training any one could recomend for better and more efficient punches? Trying is the first step to failure, and its usually not worth it.
jakmak52 Posted April 7, 2002 Posted April 7, 2002 Hips give the torque and power Best regards,Jack Makinson
3rdanblack Posted April 7, 2002 Posted April 7, 2002 I'm w/ Pacificshore in the fact that if you are using you left hand in sparring it doesn't have to be strong just fast and that'll come with timing drills and speed drills. I've put my instep through 5 boards, are you that thick?
