AceKing
I am also doing taekwondo and we test every six weeks for another belt so basically i get my black belt in a year and a half. Do you think this is too fast?
Belasko
My personal thoughts, and I've heard them mentioned by many in this forum, are that anything under at least 2 yrs to get your BB is something that should be questioned. It took me 3 1/2 yrs, and that was progressing about as fast as possible in our style. Many styles I have heard take as long as 10-15 yrs. It does depend on the school and several other factors, but I find it hard to imagine having a truly solid grasp of the wide range of basics in less than 2 years, minimum. I know I didn't Getting a blackbelt just says you have learned the basics and are ready to actually study the form as an art.
MartialArthur
It took me 3 years. In my association, it is possible to earn a Black Belt in 2.5 years, but most take longer.
Dont call me Sir
The bottom line is; it depends on the style, organisation, Instructor and the student.Personally I think the grading criteria for a BB should be done with a watch rather than a calender. In terms of ITF TKD it should be around 200 hours of formal tuition and no more. Of course everyone is different and it's up to the Instructor to decide whether the student is ready of not for a BB grading. It took me 3 1/2 years to get my ITF TKD BB, and during those 3 1/2 years of formal tuition I was down the gym 3 times a week and running, pad/bag and sparring work with my training partner at least 4 times a week.A year of my training is a lot different to year of many others, so use a watch, not a calender, is my opinion. And like all things, it's not what you do, it's the mindset and intensity in which you do it that matters.DCMS. karatekid1975
Good post, Don't call me Sir. Good point.Anyways, I'm not a BB yet (I just got my 1st gup), but I have been in TKD 4 years. I'll probably get my BB next year (06). So it would roughly be 4 1/2 years for me. Laurie F

Aodhan
If you count from when I first started, a little over 7 years. If you count just in the style I earned it in, 17 months. I did come into my current style (ATA) as a blue belt, so if I had to go from scratch in the ATA, it would have been about 29 months.1 more year to get my second degree, and I am in the middle of my 2 year stretch to get to 3rd. One more year to get your second degree and your are currently working towards your third. What kind of operation are you working out at? So are you at the start of your fourth as well?
