What age do you think is to young to have a blackbelt?

Recommended Posts

I am 13 years old (almost 14) and i just acheived my 1st dan blackbelt. I have heard some people say that only adults should have bbs. I am just as good if not better then some of the adults who i tested with. What is your opinion on the age of a blackbelt?

A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.

Defintely nobody under the age of 10. Marginally, ages 11-15. I say this because there are mental aspects to being a black belt that people that young just aren't ready to assimilate yet. (And yes, there will always be a few exceptions.)

Wearing a "black belt" and being a "black belt" are two very different things, and it's more than just physical skills.

Congratulations, that's an outstanding achievement, now grow into it.

A student that wears a black colored belt represents his Instructor and school. I think that 10 is a reasonable age for a talented, dedicated and tenured student to represent his/her school and Instructor.

Being a Black Belt is entirely different. To be a Black Belt, one must have humility, honor and respect. In order to get to the rank of black belt, one must have drive, determination, perseverance and dedication. To become a Black Belt, one must not worry about how he ranks compared to his fellow students.

Congratulations on reaching the rank of black belt. That shows that you have worked hard. The next step is to become a Black Belt. I was 14 when I received my first and second Jr. Black Belt ranks in Tae Kwon Do and Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do respectively. I was 17 or 18 when I (in my opinion) became a Black Belt.

Good post. I'm 30 and I'm not ready for BB. Physically, maybe. But, as stated above, nope.

Yea, I'm with you.......I don't mind seeing a 13 y/o with Dan status but how would you judge that? It's more than physical it's mental and 6-7-8 y/o's just don't have it.
