TheDarxide Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I'm been learning shotokan for about 6 months, and have been given an invitation to a seminar with David Hooper. I've read some of his articles, and he seems to be a "spend two hours on hip rotation during choku tsuki", which is fine, I just want to know what to expect; obviously i'm a little nervous because i'm 'new'.
pers Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 No ,I haven't train with him before but have read some of his articles and b.t.w where is this course being held ? never give up !
jkeeling Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Go to the seminar. Pay whatever is asked. It will be worth it.I have met Hooper Sensei many times over the years, mostly in Tokyo. But I also brought him over to California to teach a seminar. He is "pure JKA" which means basically do basics, then more basics and then finish it off with some basics. But he teaches them at a level where even those with 30+ years of experienced can gain some valuable insight. If you do meet up with him, please have him write to me at jon@jkasv.com.Thank you. TheDarxide Posted October 25, 2005 Author Posted October 25, 2005 It was a private seminar for members of my club. Well worth it. We concentrated on hip movement and how to step forewards correctly. Also, movement of the rear hand. Heian shodan in mirror image, that was intersting...sorry i didn't see this till afterwards, so i couldn't pass your address on.

Did he talk about his time in Japan? I have trained with a few guys here who know him from Japan and they all say he is really good. Very old-school but great instructor, mainly making the basics interesting so to speak.

I've heard lots of good things about him from people I have trained with or under. It would be great to have him here. If anybody here is friends with him maybe you could convince him to come back? If not I'll write to him directly but I figured that it would be better coming from somebody who already knows him personally.
