Menjo Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I mean, to test for your 1st dan blackbelt in our school, you have to know the Taeguek poomses. Once you have your probation blackbelt you learn the Koryo poomse and then get tested on it for your real blackbelt.I see "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
mikaveli Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 At my club, the writing on the belt is purley cosmetic and optional. The more I train, the more I see the errors in my technique
niel0092 Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 We have a BB canidate rank before 1st dan(kind of between 1st gup and 1st dan) but once you've completed the test for BB you Are a BB. We generally hand out a plain black belt for the student to wear until the embroiderd belt arrives. "Jita Kyoei" Mutual Benefit and Welfare
Aodhan Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Our style (ATA) has a recommended rank before 1st dan. It's basically a time to review all lower rank material and make sure you have it down before you test for decided rank.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
mean fighter Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 At my school writing your name on your belt is mandatory If you wash your hands in anger, you never have clean hands
Aodhan Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 At my school writing your name on your belt is mandatoryI think what they are referring to is the stitching of the name/korean/japanese symbols into their black belts.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
mean fighter Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 oh. sorry If you wash your hands in anger, you never have clean hands
ramymensa Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 We don't have probationary BB.People in our dojo get the black after 7-10 years of training. They have killer exams to pass. Once they are awarded the BB we all know they do deserve them. World Shotokan Karate
aefibird Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 At both my karate and my TKD clubs we don't have probationary belts. Students just go from 1st kyu/1st kup to 1st Dan. Writing (of name, symbols etc) is optional in both clubs.Just as an aside: I already hold a dan grade in karate and I'm hoping that I will get to test for my 1st Dan in TKD at some point (probably in the next 12 -18 months if I work really really hard and I'm lucky! lol). Do you think that I should have 2 separate black belts for each martial art? My karate BB is just a plain silk belt with nothing on it. I could understand having a separate belt for TKD if my current BB had kanji on it or whatever, but as it is just plain do you think that wearing the same belt for 2 different styles would be OK?This is a question for the future BTW - I've got to get to TKD 1st Dan standard yet!
