from what I saw I thought there was a good selection of combat effective strikes... front kicks, axe kicks, rakes and takedowns. I think the more advanced stuff (the weird cartwheel back kicks and whatnot) are what makes it seem ineffective, but a lot of those are to build power and accuracy, and if built up and practiced enough, can be devastating. Reminds me of certain kicks in Tang Soo Do... only really effective if the opponent is off balance or has NO idea of what he's into.

there is truth to that. From what I am told, the main core techniques are the real fighting aspect of capoeira. The other stuff builds strength and agility and looks good in a roda. That, however, is the stuff most people see in demos and such, for that very reason.

i did a couple of lessaons of capoeira. there are a few reasons i didnt continue, but that was more to do with the school rather than the art itself.

as for effectiveness. the original people that did it were slaves and hid it in a dance so their masters wouldnt find out, im pretty sure they would have used it to break free. i sure as hell wouldnt like to get in the way of some of those spinning kicks.

besides, be honest now, i bet most of you play as Jeff in tekken :P

It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, and I am NOT a big man.

I've been practicing Capoeira for about three years now. I got into it as a supplement to my TKD and JKD training. Since I've started, I've seen steady progress in my footwork, balance, flexibility, strength, and agility. It has also helped me with my kicking power, as my hips have gained a much larger and more diverse range of motion. Another thing I have gotten out of my Capoeira training is the ability to throw powerful kicks from unorthodoxed positions, which has increased the variety of attacks I can throw in my other martial arts sparring matches.

Accuracy is another benefit I have experienced: When you can throw an accurate kick while standing on your hands in an inverted position, it becomes exponentially easier to do so while standing upright on your feet. If you're worried about not getting enough defense techniques out of Capoeira, then just cross train. As i've presented, I've found it to be a great accessory to other MA training.

P.S. Eddie and christie are definitely the only characters that do Capoeira in Tekken. Maybe you're thinking of a different game.
