shogeri Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Sometimes things happen around the world at very close intervals in time.Sometimes they are a diffusion of ideas. With belt color, or rank, I could see african tribes doing something similar in regards to knowledge or skill. White Warlock Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 so the belt system came from europe?I thought it was in japan(forgot which style used it at first though)From a post i made just a few days ago:Colored belts were a creation of European practitioners of 'Asian' arts. Prior to that, in 1889 Jigoro Kano (founder of Kano ju-jutsu, aka: judo) introduced black and white belts as a means to differentiate students from senior students (instructors/asst instructors). He, in turn, wore a double-wide white belt. It is said he adopted the practice of white/black belts from other sports in Japan; specifically that of swimming.http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=23300&start=23 "When you are able to take the keys from my hand, you will be ready to drive." - Shaolin DMV TestIntro
shogeri Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Most teach it as dance. But then others are able to truly extract the dynamics of the style, which is a living style, and not linear, nor circular. Why_Worry Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Capoeira is actually really effective. My sensei has a friend who studies capoeira and he and his friend were just messing around but he said its liek a mazing when someone is really good. He described it as trying to fight smoke because he was like spinning everywhere on the ground and also since he teachs karate, he usually isnt used to people going ont he floor and then flying into the air then on the floor again rolling around everyhwere and stuff. It is a dance martial art, but it is also very effective and has element sof other martial arts in it if you relaly look fo rit. Focus
Why_Worry Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Oh, and the belt system in capoeira is usualyl the colors of the brazilian flag. Focus
elbows_and_knees Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 It is a dance martial art, but it is also very effective and has element sof other martial arts in it if you relaly look fo rit. It's not a dance martial art... the art was merely hidden in dance. ALL martial arts have elements of other arts in them - there are only so many ways to strike or throw a person. bowing in shuai chiao = ippon seionage in judo. reverse punch in karate = straight right in boxing. double leg = same in judo, bjj and capoeira.... techniques overlap.
elbows_and_knees Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Oh, and the belt system in capoeira is usualyl the colors of the brazilian flag.as with other arts, that varies. there are schools that have orange cords. Purple also. There are several schools that use multi color cords.
Why_Worry Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 yeah, i knew that stuff, and i think you got what i meant, but i probably wasnt clear enough, (just as a side note, the multi color cords are usually meant to match many of the colors of the flag [not always though]). I probably just wasnt clear enough so thanks for clearing that up for other people. Focus
RDsynMBZ Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 hey ive looked into capoeira i dont practice it because it is unavailable to me but it is a style of fighting, it started a long time ago when portugal inhabited brazil and slaves were forbidden to fight and there hands were always tied up, so the used a style which involved kicks and mostly only kicks, however they were not aloud to practice fightin so they had to make it look like a dance but at the same time use it to train, the later rebeled and fought off the portugese , then they took over brazil or somethin to that affect , didnt mean to go into a history lesson but it is a style of fighting, but ya most people now probly interpret it as a dance/fight rather than a fight, http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a95/CVQuiK/jackie-pose.gif
