I too believe it is more respectful to walk away then stay and fight. There is also times when walking away is not an option. If this should happen I believe we, as martial artist, should do what we are trained for to protect ourselves and others. My oath is...

Never mis-use TKD

Always respect Instructors and Seniors

Champion of Freedom and Justice

Tenants...

Curtiosity

Self Control

Integurity

Sounds like they apply to above threads

Its great to hear that oath from someone else outside my school :)

If you wash your hands in anger, you never have clean hands

Posted

It is shortened. The full one is as follows....

I shall observe the Tenants of TKD....

I shall repsect my instructors and seniors...

I shall never misuse TKD...

I shall be a champion of Freedom and justice...

I shall build a more peaceful world....

Tenants are...

Curtesy

Integrity

Persuverance

Self Control

Indominable Spirit

I actually live by these as much as I can. It is amazing how well my job has gone as well as relationships I have with others.

Sorry for any spelling issues.

We have those tenets, too. It's called the student oath, and we repeat it at the end of each class.

I always wondered if the student oath and tenets of Tae Kwon Do were universal or if they were just my school. I'm very glad to see they are universal.

And, yes, it really affects how you live if you're thinking about these tenets not just in the dojang but outside as well. I've noticed myself, say, being more patient when behind elderly people (respect seniors), and having less of a tendency to whine when I've done something wrong and have to do it again (indomitable spirit)!

We have the 5 tenets frightmaster mentioned, as well as the 5 D's:

Desire

Drive

Determination

Dedication

Discipline

We also have a school creed that is posted on the wall. We don't recite it or anything, but it's similar to what's been posted here. I spar with an Isshin Ryu Karate school that has the same tenets and also a similar oath, but I'm not sire if they recite it or not (never heard them do it.) I have a feeling that since the asian martial arts are so inter-related they will also share the same philosophies to an extent as well.

hey (goju boi) at my school we have a creed/oath its not said during classes but said during testings it is "i come to you with only karate empty hands, i carry no weapons i mean you no harm but should it be an affair of honor, possible physical harm, or a matter of principle, then here i stand with my weapons my empty hands" im not sure y we dont say it in class but my sensei is a police officer and he always says "be a leader dont be a follower" and i stand more by that then the creed but also to be a leader u have to follow leaders so that u can be a leader and i do my best at that.

In ATA, we have the Songahm Spirit oath. At the beginning of the class or event, we say:

Sir/Ma'am - I will practice in the spirit of Taekwondo, with courtesy for my fellow students, loyalty for my instructors and respect for my juniors and seniors, Sir/Ma'am.

At the end of the class or event, we say:

Sir/Ma'am - I shall live with perseverance in the spirit of Taekwondo, having honor with others, integrity within myself and self-control in my actions, Sir/Ma'am.

Seven very good concepts to live a life by, IMNSHO.
