Hey guys/girls

Is shotokan an effective style on the street, or in match.

I'm a muay thai fighter but am interested in karate, something traditional but effective, i've heard shotokan is great.

What do you think?

Hey guys/girls

Is shotokan an effective style on the street, or in match.

I'm a muay thai fighter but am interested in karate, something traditional but effective, i've heard shotokan is great.

What do you think?

I have trained and practiced Shotokan karate for more than 3 decades, but I secretly believe Muay Thai is more effective on the street or in a full contact match in the ring.

Muay Thai fighters are conditioned and trained to absorb blows to every part of their body while Shotokan karate practitioners are generally not conditioned or trained for such punishment at all. Shotokaners can show good form and powerful techniques and thus are potentially good fighters. But since they are not used to being hit hard or repeatedly, they would last against a true knockout and conditioned fighter. There are several documentaries that have shown that in full contact fights between karatekas and Muay Thai fighters, the latter always win.

So, elfordo, if you are interested in Shotokan, feel free to learn it and you can personally compare it with your Muay Thai in both training and fighting efficiency. I bet you will find yours a lot more dependable for actual fighting full contact though not as stylistic and formally aesthetical as karate.

Shotokan, trained with the same intensity and pounding that MT is trained with, will take you far. MT, trained in a 'kiddy aerobics' fashion, will be steamrollered under pressure.

Which Shotokan?

Do you mean sport Shotokan, where they do point-scoring?

Do you mean Funakoshi Yoshitaka's Shotokan, where the stances are stronger and deeper, the one that's closer to Azato's Shuri-te?

Or Do you mean Funakoshi Gichin's Shotokan that was more about katas and developing character?

The only difference between Shotokan and the most brutal fighting art is the difference in attitude in my opinion. There was a reason why Funakoshi Gichin rejected competitions, and it wasn't because his karate was weak.

Shotokan's history shows weak competition style and aggressive full-on power and military training. The choice is yours, which road you want to travel down.

shotokan as any other karate style is very effective in the street,it's just that they tend to be geared towards point fighitng.anyways if you do choose to go with shotokan, cangratulations, you made a great choice for a second style.

if u can defend and attack with it and walk away then its effective

Do not follow me I may not always lead, do not lead I may not follow, just walk beside me and be my friend-unknown

If you want to take a karate style which is effective on the street, take Kyokushinkai karate, not Shotokan karate. Kyokushinkai's contest are full contact, whereas Shotokan are semi contact. As a Muay Thai fighter I think you will feel more at home with Kyokushinkai than with Shotokan.
