ug..... lost 3 spars in a row...

Recommended Posts

m........ im a noob to kung-fu, although i've already learned many ways to win the fight in 2 sec. I sparred today and lost 3 times in a row! ahg! i think my mishpas were that 1. i just saw a martial arts movie which tends to make u forget what ur supposed to do 2. first spar so im not used to making hard grips (could have won that first spar had i not relinquish my grip) and 3. isnt it just plain stupid to throw a kick in there when the opponent is totaly focused?

uh....

Im not sure how sparring works in kung fu, but just one way that may help: say you want to get a high kick in, do heaps of low kicks and middle punches and lower the opponents focus.

I agree with B3n totally. You could also throw a lunging body punch, and use the torsion generated at the hip to throw a high kick (assuming you opponent's guard has dropped down to the punch).

Also, dont feel bad. At least you sparred and tested yourself. You can now learn from this experience. Losses are one of the most valuable lessons you can recieve in martial arts. There have been people I know who adamantly believe they could win any fight, even though they have never sparred or tested themselves against a moving opponent with his own free will. You at least stepped up and actively participated in a test and show of your skills. Be proud of yourself that you did so. Remember, you didn't have to spar, but you did. Chin up.

Oh and nice Kyokushin website B3n. But I can't seem to access the Kumite section.

If your new to kung fu why are you sparring? your not ready for that.sparring will only develope bad habits at this stage.Develope some skills first then start to sparr.Training should be progessive not just jumping before your ready.

Not only can you develop bad habits by sparring too early, but you probably lost because you do not trust your style as well as you think you do. When I was young I took "karate" lessons. Everyone can take a lesson and copy movements, but how many people actually trust their style to the point where their responses reflect the style they are learning?

It was your first spar, don't be discouraged by it. Just keep practicing and focus on your weak points. Get one of your instructors watch you and have them help you work on your weaknesses and make them your strengths. My first spar, I went down quick to a head-on groin kick. But I got up after the kick happened. Just do your best, and work on the worst. Good luck to you.

Good, keep losing for the next few months and you will start to see some progress.

If you where winning on your first time there would be cause for concern.

Yep ... Most of students who win from the first time never make it to the next one

I don't agree with that. What I will say though is that losing tests a persons true heart though, as it's easy to want to fight again after several wins, but it's hard after even only one loss.

That said, these are only sparring matches. Don't look at them in terms of win / lose but in terms of learning experiences. go into each match with a goal - focus on something you want to work on, and work on it - win or lose.

How long have you been training?
