In fact, we don't do any fancy Korean art-type kicks in Combat Hapkido, so it is basically jiu-jitsu with some more striking.

Of course, Combat Hapkido has LOTS of extra stuff that neither hapkido nor JJJ have, but that is starting to get off topic so I won't go into detail.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Hapkido isn't entirely Korean, either. 99% of Hapkido grappling comes straight from Daito Ryu Jiu-jitsu.

Just out of curiosity, that would imply that most of Kuk Sool's grappling is JJJ related, too, right?

True...However it is probably more korean influenced than you think... Choi Yong Suls story of training in Daito Ryu and getting a Menkyo Kaiden is not 100% accurate probably...Thus he watched and gave his own korean interpretation...

I would say that Kuk Sool is not related to Ju-Jutsu in anyway...I think if anything it is much more southern chinese influenced....In Hyuk Suh is said to be a master of Sip Pal Gi...Korean Kung Fu, in addition to his training from his grandfather etc...

Take care,

:-? So then why is it not called combat jiu-jitsu?

Look at boxing, or even basketball or baseball from about 50 - 70 years ago and look at where these sports have evolved to.

Was basketball what it was before Wilt, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, Dr. J?

How about boxing? Didn't guys like Jack Johnson, Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali & others put their own spin on it to make it into what it is today?

Even the UFC fighters have evolved from the first participants skill level since the early 90's.

I say all that to say that I'm sure that it (HKD) has quite abit of Japenese influence but in the last 40 years things have changed with Ji Han Jae, Bong Soo Han, Chons S. Kim & others have done with it by puting their own personalities and interpretations of it by adding & subtracting to make it work for their system, but they never referred to it as combat akijui-jitsu. Now others who've trained in Hapkido have done some modifying of some sort & here you have hwa rangdo, kuk sool won & other sort of similar styles but none of these founders are using the name hapkido in their art.
