Why , in all of Bruce's movies ??

Recommended Posts

The clothing of the Karate practioners in Fist of Legend didn't make any sense. They were wearing hakama's, which are long and wide trousers, that look like skirts and are usually black colored. Hakama's aren't good suitable for practising Karate, they would only get in the way when kicking. Hakama's were usually worn by Jiu Jitsu or Aikido practioners. Jiu Jitsu and Aikido are purely japanese arts and Karate isn't, it's Okinawan.

They were wearing Hakamas to the best of my memory because they were training in Katana. It is very common for Samurai to wear a form of Hakama, as well as Katana students.

And Okinawa is part of Japan :-P

The evil Japanese stereotype often appears in Chinese cinema and is a reflection of the long standing animosity the Chinese have towards the Japanese. Much of this hatred results from the mistreatment of the Chinese by the Japanese during WWII. Jet Li's remake of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury (Fist of Legend) is a prime example of this stereotype at work.

As you know, racism in films is not only a Chinese phenomenon. All countries use racist stereotypes in their media to promote an agenda or unwittingly to reveal certain attitudes.

Yeah thats right. look at rocky 4 usa vs russia. after drago kills apollo rocky challanges him to fight for revenge and it has to on the russians terms. then rocky trains in the snow lifting rocks and chopping wood and using all these old skool traing methods and drago is in the warm gym with all the latest equipment and it even shows him using steroids. wow i dont know how they could have made the russians look any worse.

Katana? Don't you mean kendo?

I think in Fist of Fury they use steel swords, so I may be confused on that part....or perhaps they were Bokken. Hrm....it's been a few years since I saw that movie, cut me some slack :-P

....As for Sonny Chiba, what style or styles of karate has he done?

I have read somewhere that Sonny Chiba has practised Kyokushinkai karate under Mas. Oyama. I don't know wether he was a direct student or wether he studied at the Honbu in Tokyo. I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong), that Chiba has at least a couple of dans on his black belt.

No that doesn't make any sense :-? . I definitely read that Chiba had studied Kyokushin Karate. He even portrayed Oyama in a couple of his movies. Also, I almost forgot, in his younger days he was a promising gymnast. Anyway, I am sure that there must be more reliable info on Chiba somewhere on the net. The search continues..... :karate:

Why , in all of Bruce Lee's movies , the bad boy appears in a karate Gi , or a karate pants , and fights like a karate-ka ???

It's a subtle cinematic propaganda which propounds the dictum that the karate gi doesn't make the karateka. Those people in karate gi in the movie all got kicked in their "behind" by the hero. So, the moral of the story: It is the karateka that is his karate and not his karate gi. He might fight in his birthday clothes and still wins.

Anyway, this reminds me of the Jacky Chan's movie, Tuxedo.,where the suit makes the fighter the winner he never was. It's only a movie!
