I asked my instructor(a Muay thai kick boxer) whats the difference between a karate kick and a muay thai round house kick.

Now I have been doing Muay Thai for 3 months now, and ever since I joined this forum everyone here has been saying that the Muay Thai round house kick is stright!?

The way my intructor taught me is to step out 45, use your shin of course, RELAX YOUR LEG, and just swing your hip.

The result: a very whip like action from the hip to knee to the leg.

It looks snapy, SNAPY?, A MUAY THAI KICK IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE SNAPY IS IT!? I guess the best way to describe it is, a Karate kick that has a relaxed leg but kicks all he way through the opponent. Would that be a thai kick? ( therefore not kicking with a straight leg)

Now I know the kick is not 100% straight that would be very hard, but how straight is the leg? is it a little curved? Obviously theres no chambering. Should I just throw my kick with that general rule of no chambering? aka the knee and leg lifting up and soon as I kick? Also... How can you have a dead leg thats straight? if the leg is dead won't it WHIP into the target with your hips?

a karate kick snaps at the knee joint. a muai thai kick follows through the target the knee only straightens but doesnt bend again to come back. I belive that hips are the key to this kick

i much prefer the karate kick but i would coz i havent trained in muai thai. I do belive that the muai thai kick is more powerful

The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.

im the same^^ but yeah the MT kick is alot more powerful.

straight in the sense that it does not chamber.

don't just swing the hip - turn it over.

The result: a very whip like action from the hip to knee to the leg.

the best way to describe it it non MA related - a whip and a baseball bat. A bat is a blunt object that just plows through something - that is a thai kick. Other TMA chamber the leg relying on the snap - like a whip.

how bent a leg is will vary from person to person - you let it keep the natural bend your leg has when you lift it - don't bend or straighten it any more than that.

dead leg is a relative term. you leg can never really be dead unless you are asleep, in which case you wouldn't be kicking. there is always residual tension in a muscle, so it's never truly dead. That term is merely used to describe an unchambered leg - it's not actively, consciously bent and is therefore dead.

I've trained both, but prefer the thai kick. more power and better striking area.

Thank you very much, you have clarified many of the the things I found confusing. Essentialy you never lift your knee and then extend the leg, but do both at the same time "causing it to be stright".

I found a video of my teacher on his website: Pacifickickboxing.com

By your definition I guess his kicks would be thai kicks.
