Phantasmatic Posted March 19, 2002 Posted March 19, 2002 Has anyone ever heard of these styles? I practice Shuri ryu and it is supposed to be similar. Just wondering if anyone has heard of or practiced these elusive arts (by elusive i mean not well known) "Which one is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi

AnonymousOne Posted March 19, 2002 Posted March 19, 2002 Shuri is a town in Okinawa in which the style was named. Namely Shuri Te or Shuri hand. It later bacame known as Shorin Ryu. The town of Naha had its own style. Two schools came out of there, Uechi Ryu and Gojuryu. Tomari was another town which had its own style but later was mixed with Shuri Te Shuri or Shorin Ryu has very different Kata to Gojuryu _________________ Soft teachers make soft students [ This Message was edited by: AnonymousOne on 2002-03-19 16:46 ] 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. ronryu Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 correction there is another style now called shorei ryu which is what it was called befor naha te (this is also what Funakoshi refered to it as ) but you are correct shuri is where shorin ryu came from . I belive that shorei ryu may be a more modern name that some gave to it after breaking away form goju but i caint say for sure its hard enough jsut trying to keep up with the branches of my on style . AnonymousOne Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 Shorei Ryu - Naha Te Shorin Ryu - Shuri Te, Tomari Te Shorei Ryu is a term used to cover the styles that came out of Naha, namely GojuRyu and Uechi Ryu. When Funakoshi spoke of Shorin and Shorei he was refering to the various schools that came out of Shuri and Naha towns. 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul.
