    • Yes, we've been taught to keep a tight fist for all closed hand techniques (Yes)

    • What the heck are you talking about? You're supposed to be loose all over until impact! (No)

    • Chibana, Ohtsuka, and Motobu? Who are these guys? (Huh?)

None of the above.

Many years ago I dumped the tightened fist. I have enough skill to hit with my knuckles without having a fist at all. My fingers can hang loose and I can still plant my knuckles.

The reason for this is that a fist has nothing to do with punching with a knuckle as the contact point. It is the muscles and tendons of the forearm that stabilize and align the knuckles. Having a clenched fist does not help anything but to keep your fingers from getting caught on something.

I also can do this. :brow:

Loose hand and straight wrist is the way to go... The hand is closed only to keep from breaking the fingers. Knuckles take the impact of the punch.

I follow the same rule, as far as re-griping, I do it after each set of moves, like in pinan shodan , 3 opening moves to the left are together so i keep my fist, when i turn for the right side, i do regrip quickly.

24 Fighting Chickens, in Chuan Fa we call that strike an Elephant's Head. Just a little piece of useless trivia.

I agree with Killer Miller on this one. A fist is simply a term for a hand position. It does not need to be "tight." As long as the wrist is straight, the arm will tense as necessary to avoid it bending and being injured. If your squeezing your fist, you're wasting energy.

I just realized I neglected to mention that I do not "regrip."

When doing kata my fist is tight but not overly tight. It is very much what I picked up from my traing in Shorin Ryu Shorinkan clinched fist but evertyhing tightened and then instantly relaxed at impact. The pentetration power on those strikes once they are devoloped and done very well is amazing and absolutely letheal.

the irony is that sensei Chibana was a re-griper.
