AndrewGreen Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Actually, what do you think about such special titles? What do you think about 10th Dans? Yeah, some of you may not know that there ARE 10th Dans out there. What do you think people need to achieve to prove themself worthy of these?People are free to call themselves whatever they want and claim whatever rank they want. At the time of his death he was ranked as a 9th degree black belt, the highest rank attainable in our style, and held by a single person. He was awarded his 10th degree posthumously. I wish I had the article handy, it mentioned the names of the other TKD Grandmasters that awarded him that rank/title.Matt White
AndrewGreen Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I think if someone attached a title like that to me after I died I'd come back from the grave to dish out some butt, using "Ghost Style Kung Fu" Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!

scottnshelly Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Sorry, never trained with any of the aforementioned Masters, however, I did see (from a distance) Jhoon Rhee. He got up on stage at a Super Grands World Games tournament and did his famous 100 pushups in 60 seconds. He also played the harmonica while standing on one foot and balancing an apple on his head (or something along those lines).John Chung was also at that tournament as a judge for the grand championship. I was more excited to meet Master Chung, to be honest.
Kill Jill Posted September 29, 2005 Author Posted September 29, 2005 To Andrew Green,This is not a dig at you or anything. I just feel it's important to respect the traditional Buddhist ethos of martial arts, and respect a title that is endowed on seniors who have clearly made big, positive accomplishments in their field. Here in Korea, ancestor worship is a very big thing. Deceased family members are treated as if they are still alive and present in the family home. Their photos and artefacts will typically hold a prominent place in the main room, and sometimes they will be 'asked' their opinion in decision making processes. In China and Taiwan, this idea of the living dead gets even more extreme.Whether I believe in the afterlife or not is not an issue. I just think that it's hard to accept losses of certain key people who have influenced so many. Maybe some deserve such a title.About the 10th Dan holders. I haven't yet scoured the Internet, but as far as I know, there are 5 10th Dan holders in (or were in) existence. Does anyone know who they are? There are no limits.http://taekwondodiaries.blogspot.com^^*
Steve_K Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 You know Jhoon Rhee taught Bruce Lee kicks right? That's right.

Rokusho_Tao Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 I have never heard of any of the grandmasters that you listed... But I train under Grandmaster Man Hee Han. He is a great man, and an excellent instructor...
