ShotokanKid Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 What do you think are pros of attending tournaments often?Any cons? Goldtooth Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Pros: you develop appealing kata (if you win) you become a good point sparrer (if you win) exposureCons: Non flashy katas dont win, which devalues many simply yet integral kata of thier true value. Point sparring is not real life, and many effective point sparrers train to succede in an artifical MA environment. The overall image of a school or style might be hurt by poor tournement results, despite apractical, well thought out and established curriculum. "What do you tell a guy with two black eyes?-nothing. Somebody's already told him. Twice."
White Warlock Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 what type of tournament? I.e., what are you emphasizing? forms, point contact, full contact? "When you are able to take the keys from my hand, you will be ready to drive." - Shaolin DMV TestIntro
JKDkid2 Posted September 24, 2005 Posted September 24, 2005 but for the forms arent there two different kata/form competitions one with open routines and one traditional so then u you don't really need to do anything flashy unless you were in open forms.
SubGrappler Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 There are many types of tournaments, so its hard to be specific. The best thing you can achieve that I believe to be universal among all tournament goers is getting used to the adrenaline dump. Fighting becomes a whole different situation when that happens- the more experience you have in it the better.
cleung Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Pros: learning experience that one can't get in a school, meeting new friendsCons: cost and travel ClintFree Spirit Martial Arts Activewearhttp://www.FreeSpiritActivewear.com
Socratic_Sifu Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 great exposure to other styles--if it is a truly open tournament--Sometimes "Open" tournaments are one style--great opportunity to see the other styles out there, learn more about your own particular brand of MA, meet lifelong friends, if you plan on moving ou can also find out which schools from whatever area you are moving to best compliment your personality & Physical traits, tourneys are just fun! whether competing or not. The best part for me is seeing the glow on a student's face when he applies the concepts and techniques that he/she learned in class actually work! When fear is removed, the arrogance of uncertainty is dispelled and it is therefore no longer necessary to prove yourself in any form of combat. By learning how to fight, you learn how not to fight.
