Similar to my "Tactics" question – there are three main structures for fighting on the ground…

Strike – strike – strike

Immediate lock/submission, and if it fails go for another, and another.

Positional Control first then look for strikes or submissions (which?)

So – which do you favour & why?

I'm real new to BJJ, but I'm attempting to get mount or side control over my opponents, so if it was a real fight, I could pumble them with punches. Obviously in sparring I don't do that, so I try to get a submission hold IF I get mount or side control.

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.

Hi Bon

Do you hold your mount or side control differently with thoughts about striking? Have you thought about how to minimise how much you weaken your base when you strike? What about which types of strikes allow most control of the position?

YODA, I'm still learning how to do the side control and mount properly..

I don't really hold it any differently.. e.g. I have mount, person I'm mounted on goes to grab my groin - leaves himself open for punches when he does that.

You can wrap your legs around their shins to stabilise yourself some more with the mount.

I'd most likely go for 'normal' punches, that being the big right hand coming down on almost a 90 degree angle.

Now this is what it's all about. Two people talking ma. Helping each other out. I think that it's cool that everyone is here for the same reason. To talk MA. :karate:  Sorry that this was way off topic.

With any form of lock i'm looking for a way to either smack the guy out or choke him out. So if i've got a mount on the guy i'm gonna smack him with left right left right left right punch combo's etc... Rickson Gracie's used this tactic to gain submission before, and he doesn't even practice any for of striking art!!

If i'm on the ground or on the guy's back or something then i'm gonna try a rear choke hold, the eqasiest of the lot!

I think you (as many do) vastly underestimate how much standup & striking Rickson has trained. I knwo from a VERY reliable source tyhat he's done a lot - a helluva lot. In fcat one world class JKD instructor I know stopped taking privates with Rickson 'cos all he wanted to do was work standup striking with him - the wrong person was paying for the private!
