ElbowTKO
It's true that you supose to kick through your target, but when you miss aren't you suppose to plant your feet back down into a southpaw stance?I have a hard time doing this, because when you do a muay thai round house kick ( not a low kick ) you lift your left foot so that your on the ball and not the heel. Then the swing from my right leg just carries my entire body so far to the left that I don't land in a good southpaw position but a really bad one ( like my feet land in a straight line as oppose to a very square muay thai stance)Perhaps I'm not suppose to be on the ball of my feet when I step offline? Aikido have names for techniques like "heaven and earth."which represents the creation of the universe along with a philosophical meaning.Muay Thai have names for techniques like "closing the lamp", which means "punch him in the eye." elbows_and_knees
three things:1. the kick is done with with a lot of power. If you miss, you will not plant your foot in a southpaw stance, because you are in most cases going to turn at least 180 degrees. There are some who can kick extremely hard and catch the kick in mod delivery, but from what I've seen, most cannot. Even if they could, they miss the opportunity for what I will mention next.2. from the 180 degree position, you can launch a back kick - it's a good counter as some people will rush in on you after missing the kick. The other option is what ben said - spin 360 degrees. If you do this, end the spin with a leg check, because it's highly likely that a kick will be returned to you.3. It's generally considered a bad idea to switch leads. most fighters pick one lead and stick with it.

Dragn
These days alot of kick boxers here in Japan dont spin the full 360. Focus on projecting your body weight forward to give the kick more power and length. After missing you plant your foot slightly past 180. This may seem like a dangerous position and it would be if you stayed there. But if your opponent has moved back far enough for you to miss it means he's probably out of range too. After planting your foot immediately push off the floor with it to bring yourself back into regular fighting stance. Once you get the hang of this it can sometimes be preferable to turning your back.I've seen alot of Thais do this too. Both methods have pro's and cons, it pays to practise both. elbows_and_knees
the problem with the 360 is the you don't know where the counter will come from, but you had better be expecting one. By turning 180, you have a counter of your own - the back kick.
Muaythaiboxer
some of the more traditional thai fighters will do a hook/heel kick after missing. Fist visible Strike invisible
Ben Martin
i if i miss i usually throw my left foot up with a front push kick i do it so fast that most people dont expect it and stop their attack. Jay
i think thats one of the problems when you dont snap you kick but in MT you dont so i guess its just practice The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.
