SaiFightsMS Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 Recently somewhere else I was reading someones question about doing a breaking demonstration. It seems as long as they said they had been a black belt they had never done any breaking. So a bit mystified by this I ask in your schools isn't some sort of breaking required for advancement to black belt rank?
AnonymousOne Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 Our school does not require it 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. If you are cruising, make time for losing
ronryu Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 We do not require it either . Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life .Sandan Motobu ha Shi-to ryu karate Katsu ryu kempo Ryukyu kobudo
Karateka Posted March 18, 2002 Posted March 18, 2002 Neither does mine. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
SaiFightsMS Posted March 18, 2002 Author Posted March 18, 2002 Really? Wow? I had to do a straight punch, hammerfist, and elbow break for mine. Not to mention the foot break.
SaiFightsMS Posted March 20, 2002 Author Posted March 20, 2002 I am still a bit blown away that not all schools require breaking for black belt.
Phantasmatic Posted March 20, 2002 Posted March 20, 2002 Breaking is IMHO a way of taking off stress. Havent you ever seen karate kid 2? "Can you break a log like that?" said Ralph Macio. "Don't know, never been attacked by a tree!" said Mr. Morita "Which one is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi
AnonymousOne Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 One could condition themselves to break without ever having learned any martial art. Breaking is not a good measure of skill at all. Bruce Lee said "Boards dont fight back" How true. 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. If you are cruising, make time for losing
Phantasmatic Posted March 22, 2002 Posted March 22, 2002 Anonymous is right. They say that a board is as strong as a rib, but when a person is moving it is a little harder to hit those ribs. What i am getting at is that breaking boards in one spot is like jabbing someone while their down and trying to show off strength. Not really a great martial art attitude.
