Go To Sleep Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 I've been wanting to get into grappling for a while, and I found a good looking BJJ gym nearby.So I was wondering, should I go for the gi class, or the no gi class? Does it really matter? No gi classes are only once a week, but gi classes are twice a week. So whats the deal grapplers? Help out an amateur.

WolverineGuy Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Forgive the generalization, but with the gi generally tends to concentrate more on solid technique...without a gi is a faster game with less grips, and luck sometimes has more play in it. Maddwraph Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 my teacher told me that no-gi also involves more strenthg. how does this work exactly about gi requires more technique? its harder to grab on to someone who has no gi. i find that harder, but maybe i havent had enough expierence in it. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
supergalactic Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Here is how I look at it, you can be very explosive with or without the Gi. With the Gi it is a different game because you have collars, pant legs, sleeves to grab, you can use the guys own Gi to choke him out. I find that I move faster without the Gi(obviously) but because I train 3days a week with it and 3days no Gi. No Gi you really need solid technique, because you are dealing with a sweaty opponent so you really need control and quickness.I don't think strength is a huge part because the whole thing wtht BJJ and Sub-fighting is attacking the weak joint or one limp. So a 155lbs guy can tap out a 205lbs who is much stronger. The 155lbs guy may get an arm drag, throw one hook in and get his back and finish with a RNC or just control him by taking his back. Go To Sleep Posted September 3, 2005 Author Posted September 3, 2005 I'm really leaning towards the no gi class. I cant take both... it's a financial thing because I have to pay for boxing training too. But the downside is the no gi class is only once a week.
