Training To Feed An Ego

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie in the martial arts world, I started Wing Chun a week ago and I'm looking into Aikido, which is offered at the same place. Anyway, I was at my 2nd lesson, and noticed someone who was looking for trouble, being too rough, a guy who gives jocks a bad name, you know the type. I was wondering what all your thoughts are on these sort of people? I think they're a shame to martial arts...

Last guy I met like that was a black belt at another dojo.......

.....I beat the life out of him in front of the rest of the class.

In fairness to myself he was the one that challenged ME to throw down :)

A lot of new guys in BJJ have that "blow your load" mentality as we call it, they just don't understand what it takes to learn, and that winning isn't everthing while training. Every now and then there are guys who are like that forever, I just avoid them for the most part because they're useless as training partners- unless I feel like whoopin them.

I have guys who are new to or are from more power oriented martial arts who try to overpower me cause im skinnyer than them and when i hit them they find out size doesnt matter but the guys who have taken other martial arts seem to learn this lesson faster which is good

I try to avoid them. If you have to work with them, tell them you're not intrested in roughness. If they don't stop, talk to the Sensei. In our dojo this sort of behavior isn't accepted, and either the instructor or a senior student will resolve the issue.

bjj is a different animal... you almost have to be like that there, because you start rolling from the get go, with no experience at all. It is that drive to win that keeps you above the water. Later, when you get some mat time and some technique under your belt, you begin to relax into what you are doing. But your will was forged in the beginning phase. You are constantly getting tapped by the higher ranked guys though, which keeps the ego in check. It's part of the learning process.

size matters - a lot. you will see this when these guys start getting as skilled as you. Size becomes more of a factor as skill levels become closer, because in addition to having the same (or greater) skill level than you, I also have a size and power advantage.

They're everywhere. I see them at every koshikai that I go to. Typically they can spar well, but they take liberties with kata. I try to stay clear of them. But when I have to I’m more than willing to stand my ground. When that happens they will usually make excuses for how poorly they did that day.

Well said.

It's scary isn't it. Everyone has an excuse. Personally, I just try my best and work as hard as I can. I don't try to hurt anyone and I expect not to be hurt. Mistakes happen and getting hit is part of the game, but if it happens more than once or twice, I can help them remember waht it feels like to be on the receiving end of a powerful technique.

In my case, I'm decent sized. Some folks are bigger than me, others much smaller. I try to work folks as hard as possible, and expect to be pushed hard. But I don't want to hurt folks. So I try and talk with them as much as possible. Communication is critical to working well with others.

There are some of those people everywhere even at the place i go to where its supposed to be a peaceful art hence the name "the peaceful way". But still its fun sparring them cause they are usually somewhat big and htink they are real strong and kidna just charge you or go crazy. Its fun cause in my style we focuse more on dodging or pushing away so i just dodge around them and they just keep swinging and swinging til they are tired. So usually only begginers are liek that or people who havent been to class in a while because after a little while they have to change or get hurt.
