I agree with the points that Meguro mentioned , but if you insist on taking martial arts , take judo or boxing .

Boxing and judo are part of some of the things learnt, under the JKD umbrella .

Plus in response to a post about marines and such, i didnt understand why you would raise it. Simply, if one is phsycially fit, there capability to last in a fight, i.e...endurance and so... is grately magnified. The training of the attributes prepares you for real world situations. Push ups train your pushing power, sit ups train your core..essenstial for any martial artist. Cross training in a sport, weights or whatever is a GREAT compliment to martial art training.

Sparring is on the menu later without question of course.

Hard work is a good thing and part of that is hard training!

Judo, jujitsu and Kung fu are also found in Kenpo.

Excercise is not everything, maybe he wants to have some martial arts to add to his hand to hand arsenal.Something to focus all the excercise strength not because he has to fight, but because it is not a bad idea to have that knowledge.

Let me reiterate, i do not do martial arts as a sidenote to weights or anything...its ALL part of getting fit. I train to learn the arts, to defend myself and to be more confident...and yes...to get in shape! Is martial arts not exercise afterall??

Look at Bruce Lee...he conditioned himself so he had more power, speed and stamina. As many athletes cross train to get there phsyical fitness up to par.

This gives them the edge in there sport and the capability to perform and to perform again and again...stamina stems and is cultivated through sheer phsyical activity and stress. Hence a push up.. a run...hitting a bag etc.

Technique is useless if you do not have the tools to carry those techniques out!

And learning to take a hit does NOT make you a punch bag!! It preperes your threshold to pain, for sparring or fighting later on. Many people just cant wait to fight!! You have to walk before you can run, as the cliche goes.

P.s... in my opinion, a warrior can be anyone, a fireman, someone who gives to others, your parents...anyone who strives to be good, to be better in life. We are all in this together. The people dying everyday through war, hunger, disaster.

We should not be so closed minded to that. A warrior a fighter through life!!

And Bruce Lee died in his 30's. Look Bruce, you have a generous interpretation of the word warrior. Mine is far more strict. While you might find your daily life war-like, real warriors are patrolling in combat zones or walking a beat in Detroit. You might like to cultivate a warrior spirit. This is fine if it works for you. Life can be a struggle. However, struggling to get good grades in school, or a promotion at work is different from struggling to stay alive when you're surrounded by people who intend to kill you.

The op stated he was short on funds and in a short time was headed for USMC basic. What might be in store for this individual, could be worlds away from our sheltered existence. I wanted him to be fully aware that the enemy he faces would not think twice about blowing his legs off and dragging his corpse through the dusty roads of wherever the Marines are needed. The op would benefit more from improving his combat shooting skills or buying a good bullet-proof vest than what he might derive from a couple months of Krav Maga and Judo.

Fine, i find it odd how the subject originally raised can go onto war?!??

Bruce Lee dying i knew would be raised...hey, people can smoke, do no exercise and drink everyday and live to 90!!...

So because muhammed ali has parkinsons, your gonna stop training and sparring for fear of being knocked in the head a few times??

Because the op mentioned he was going into Marine basic training and afterwards might find himself in Iraq.

I train every day and compete in knockdown tournaments. This doesn't make me a warrior, just a guy with a hobby.

Look, I'm all for training hard Bruce. You and I have no quarrel here. But hoping to get something out of a few months of Krav Maga and "x" when the enemy is pointing an AK-47 at you indicates some kinda disconnect with reality. If I had six months before basic and possibly getting shipped over to Iraq, I wouldn't spend that time in a dojo.

We all have our paths, if your friend decided to get into the Marines or the army, thats his choice. The fact that he actually gets to be in a hostile country where a lot of people would try to kill him, and he carries a gun to kill those other people at the same time, fine, his life revolves around wars like that. We never forced him to join the Marines, he gave consent to being a soldier.(granted,I applaud his bravery)

We also live in a hostile country where a lot of people would kill you or harm you either for fun or to rob you or because he/she got mad at you.Does he live in a greater danger than us? Just because he lives in an implicit life of war doesnt mean we are not at war with our everyday dangers and problems. :karate:

If your friend wants to learn Krav Maga or whatever other sport. Leave him be, because our soldiers carry bullet proof vests and still get killed. And they are not the only ones who get killed. If you got jumped on the street and they stick a gun in your face you die along with your bullet proof vest. :P

We all die eventually, if he wants to enrich his life with martial arts, he lives a better life for it. :karate:

Last nite at JKD was good because the instructor got us to hit, really hit, each other!!! With thai kicks, punches etc... to strengthen our threshold to being struck. Not matter how good you are, if you are not ready to take a few knocks, when you are hit, its a real shock!!!

Most people quit after this training, but like training the attributes, its crucial to the development of the serious martial artist.

After all, in a real fight, no punches are pulled!!!!! Maybe in point karate and stuff its not needed.

Watching a kali demo before my class, we saw a full contact spar session....one guy had a massive lump on his arm from the sticks!! It was a real scrap!! Kind of shocking for a beginner like me but with the training i am getting, it should toughen me up!

Sounds like a usual class for me.
