mourning_ Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 hi everyone, im new to these forums..(lord have mercy...im a member on like 3463976 different types of forums...) anyways, im REALLY interested in learning some USEFUL moves/chokes/strikes etc but i have a very short time. im supose to start take krav maga? in about a week, i have 4-5 months before i ship to bootcamp (USMC - OOORAHHH) and im rather low on $$. does anyone have any useful tips to help me train on my own? i realy want to go further in this than what the Marine Corps does and i'd like to be able to prottect myself in sunny iraq as well as glorious kansas city kansas. what style would go well with krav maga? (sp) i can box at home and im supose to start working with my friend a bit.. (unless he backs out) so what style? and tips for working on my own whether it be boxing or kicks etc....also...anyone in the kansas city area that could help me?(whether out of the goodness of your heart, or for a few $$)it'd be greattlyyy appreciated.thanks
SubGrappler Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, and Sambo all fit in extremely well with Krav Maga, simply because Krav gets many of their unarmed techniques from those styles.
CloudDragon Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 The best tip is to do this: Run, situps, run, pushups, run, chinups, run... Well, you get the idea. Right now, get in top physical shape, don't worry about fighting skills just yet. The USMC has a pretty decent MA program, learn it, not only will it help you for personal protection, it will look good on your record. Once you are out of the initial training for the Corps you will very likely find alot of choices in training in your off time. Many bases offer training at the gym or recreation centers, there are also alot of informal groups that train, just ask around and you will find something you like, I always did.As far as protecting yourself in KC, I recommend a Glock. BTW, do you know what you will be doing in the Corps? A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
glockmeister Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 As was stated before, boxing or MT would greatly compliment your Krav Maga training. I dont know where you live but not every area has MT schools but booxing school are usually more common and more affordable. "You know the best thing about pain? Go To Sleep Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Muay Thai is great for combat and self defense. If thats not availabe good boxing training would be great.
Menjo Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Yea because of time strain id recommend muay thai, because its very easy to learn the basics and you get fit fast, also Brazilian jujitsu for the same reasons. I dont recommend the more traditional martial arts because they usually take alot longer to feel the benifits. "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
mourning_ Posted September 1, 2005 Author Posted September 1, 2005 im a 2311. as of right now im reserves, just because if i can get accpeted into a college i can apply for PLC if i make the grades in college. (im pretty sure i'd have at least a 3.2) basically a 2311 is an ammo tech, im not sure EXACTLY what they do, but it has to do with recyling ammo/bombs etc making sure they are good to go, if nto dump em. but every Marine is a rifleman. im supose to go down and have a interview soon with one of the Co's Gunny's or someone at my reserve unit. so im sure i'll learn more about my MOS then..i wanted infantry, but there was none available at the time of enlistment.. (can u believe that?!) anyways, im taking krav maga and starting bjj in a few weeks. thanks for the info/avice.w00000t
bruceflea Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Last nite at JKD was good because the instructor got us to hit, really hit, each other!!! With thai kicks, punches etc... to strengthen our threshold to being struck. Not matter how good you are, if you are not ready to take a few knocks, when you are hit, its a real shock!!!Most people quit after this training, but like training the attributes, its crucial to the development of the serious martial artist. After all, in a real fight, no punches are pulled!!!!! Maybe in point karate and stuff its not needed.Watching a kali demo before my class, we saw a full contact spar session....one guy had a massive lump on his arm from the sticks!! It was a real scrap!! Kind of shocking for a beginner like me but with the training i am getting, it should toughen me up! Be like water my friend!!
Kajukenbopr Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Kajukenbo goes well with krav Magaboth styles practice effective devastating self defense, both are really street wise, and they compliment each other well. <> Be humble, train hard, fight dirty
Kajukenbopr Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 brucefleaTaking too many hits really teach you where it hurts more and where its better to be struck at.Other than that, you just become a punching bag,really...better ask for sparring full contact. <> Be humble, train hard, fight dirty
