Deathcometh Posted April 11, 2002 Posted April 11, 2002 I always was told to kick with the ball of your foot.

Eric-TKD Posted April 15, 2002 Posted April 15, 2002 Heh...I practice ITF Tae Kwon-Do and we are definitely taught to execute front kicks using the ball of our foot. I think in the end it makes much more sense to use the ball of your foot, as using the top, or instep, could result in injury pretty easily. Of course if you've got shoes on it may be a different story all together. Current Belt: Blue belt - 4th GupCurrent Hyung: Toi-Gye Hyung
ZeRo Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 i was tought to use the ball of my foot but for groin kicks i think the top of your foot would be more useful.
tessone Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 In KSW, we're taught to execute front kicks with the ball of the foot, too. I'd think kicking with the top of the foot would hurt rather a lot. And doing a front kick with your heel...you'd have to have a lot of flexibility or risk losing your balance... Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
ckdstudent Posted May 13, 2002 Posted May 13, 2002 We're taught that it depends on the target, knee, thigh, and most targets you'd use the ball of the foot for more penetrating power and concentrated force. Groin you'd use the instep simply because it causes more pain on contact. If you were aiming for the chest or above the waist you'd want the heel because you can push your target backwards more. ---------Pil SungJimmy B
Withers M.A.A. Posted May 13, 2002 Posted May 13, 2002 Both are correct. You can either kick with the instep or the ball of your foot. The difference is: Instep: The kick is usually a snapping kick in which you strike with the instep quickly snapping your foot out and back. This kick has the same effect as that of a whip. Ball: This is a thrusting kick. This technique is designed to use more power from the kicker and relies on Impact more than speed. A ball kick is similar to driving the end of a bat into someones stomache.
