Recently, I heard from my friend that he was playing

a friendly visit to a Wing Chun coach. And maybe need

to take some video also so as to explain how Wing Chun

defense from being attack.

When asking if any rehearal needed or form planned demo, like

my friend using simple straight punch like karate, the coach

said, "Wing Chun needs no rehearal, just do whatever you can."

Result turned to be quite embarrasing when the coach was

being hitted 5 times by the same action like Sao (哨拳) of Choy Li Fut. Surely, the failure shoot has not been recorded or even

if, my friend would prefer to delete this.

Of course, my friend did not close his fist to make punch but using

palm. Otherwise, this would hurt more.

Now, come to the point for Wing Chun people. How often that you play

with other style? And have you ever deal with Sao, a kind of diagonal outstretch punching of fist and forearm from 1:30 o'clock to 7:30 o'clock

or even simply a Right hook from Boxing?

Hi,

I personally do not get the opportunity to sparr with people from other styles of martial arts. I would like to but do not get the chance.

We do spar in class quiet often.

A white belt in my style could easily stop a boxing hook.

I have only come across one person would use the Sao punch* as you mentioned. He came up with it himself, it is not taught by our teachers. He was a high level then me, but is not that far advanced from me.

At first the Sao punch was unexpected and difficult to deal with. It took me a couple of rounds of sparring with him before I learnt to deal with the Sao punch. That was all about 6 months ago. He no longer trains and he had stopped using Sao punch on me anyway as I could defend it easily in the end.

In the last 6 months I have expanded my range of techniques. Some of which would help me against the Sao punch.

I expect that anyone with a black belt in Wing Chun should be able to deal with Sao punch.

* It sound wierd to write Sao Punch. As far as I understand Sao means arm, so to say Arm Punch sounds weird. How I take it to mean a round punch that starts above the shoulder, it punches down and across the body.

Ali...who was the Wing Chun sifu?

Indeed, that is not sparring but rather a demo.

Just 1 defend movement to 1 attack movement. :(

Sorry but I think this is not very polite to tell you

the Wing Chun Sifu's name....

But I can tell you that I am not composing story. 8)

It sounds like you are tring to cause trouble.you give us this story about your friend easly beating a WC sifu and he documents it,yet you will not say who he is?What the point of the post then?you make it sound like wing chunner can't fight.

No,

No matter you are doing Karate, TKD, Muay Thai or what....

One should be open-minded even when you are Sifu.

Everyone can be hitted.

But if one is being hitted 5 times by same technique and same

position. This should be more aware of that sort of technique.

No one should addict to just one's own system.

Be open-mind.... That kind of story can happen to the Sifu and

may also happen to other people studying the same art.

What is the problem to be open-minded? I remember in one article in a magazine claiming that one Pro Kick-boxer in his gym is confident that

he can be avoided Take-down by one single upper cut or

low kick. Then he tried that with other fellow in his gym and know the truth is not as easy as what they thought.

Result is that all kick boxer in his gym went for cross training in ground fight.

I have no problem with keeping an open mind, but are you saying if you don't cross train your gong-fu is useless?

I think if one do not cross-train, one should at least aware of

merit and demerit of which one learnt.

I'm a not a big avocate of cross training, however I feel its very important to spar and to test your art agaist other arts.If your not able to defend agaist so other art then your own then you need to either train harder (if you lask skill )or if your teacher can't teach you what you need to know then you need to find a new teacher, but I don't think the answer is in cross training.
