Menjo Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 My Main question is why do people take those classes and whats the logic to it? My guess is that they are unconfidnce to preform martial arts? or they think that it doesnt work? Can anyone explain the logic to it?Also martial arts is much more effective( i think) since it is a way of life and a thousand other reasons so why not take martial arts i just dont get it. UseoForce Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 I don't understand the question. People take self defense classes to to learn self-defense. I've taught a few myself. In my expierience, people who take self defense classes like the idea of martial arts but don't have the desire/time/want to commit to full- time training. If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!
Menjo Posted August 28, 2005 Author Posted August 28, 2005 ok thats a good point thats all i wanted to knowMy understanding was that people choose these classes over martial arts becuase they thought it was more effective, however i see why now. Sauzin Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 That's my understanding as well. Self defense classes are often given by martial artists to attempt to educate and teach the most basic aspects of self defense for the time and commitment constrained individual. I've told many people, if you have the time and commitment then practicing a martial art is without a doubt the best way to become “as good as you can be” . But in many aspects it can be overkill. If someone is just looking to defend themselves against an a non trained combatant or just learn how to deal with bad situations defense classes can defiantly help, particularly when time constraints are an issue. The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.
Menjo Posted August 29, 2005 Author Posted August 29, 2005 ok thanks for moving it anyway, but yea i wonder if those classes really work. Im guessing some do and some dont because it depends on the instructor, but without training the techniques into their mind constantly will the people be able to use the techniques effectivly in the heat of the moment? pineapple Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 A self defense class teaches a few martial arts techniques which they feel are effective! Will it work?It may or may not dependant upon your opponent.Any type of martial arts training improves your chances of success but nothing is guaranteed! What works works

tkdBill Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Are you referring to one-day self-defense seminars? If so, I think it may help in rare cases, but will generally not prepare someone to react in a real life self-defense situation even against an untrained attacker. People take those classes for the same reason people buy every weight-loss plan that comes down the pike, especially the ones that do not require excercise. People want results, but they do not want to work for them.--
Uechi Kid Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 People are basically lazy. If they think that they can spend fifty or a hundred dollars on a self-defense class that they will be able to take care of them selves with a minimal amount of work. As we all know, it takes hours and hours of hard work performing a technique properly to make it work in real life.I always told my children that there are no short cuts in life. That is very true with self-defense. More Practice
Menjo Posted August 29, 2005 Author Posted August 29, 2005 Yes, good points i find there are alot of lazy people in martial arts aswell "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
