Maddwraph Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 hey, ive been doing BJJ for about 3 months now, no-gi, and i thinking about entering the grapplers tournament in september, but i dont know if its a good idea. im 17, around 155 pounds, and a white belt, so they will put me with a certain division right?honestly, the thing that is really getting to me about this tournament is the cost. i was told it costs $100 to enter. i dont want o pay 100 and have the chance of coming out with nothing. if you lose once are you out? dam, id feel bad paying that much money and not getting out of it. i know it sounds bad, but thats a months worth of jiujistu for me. if i could get a medal that be cool. anyways, im not sure waht i should do. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
SubGrappler Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 If you cant afford it, dont worry about it- Grapplers Quest is an expensive venue to fight in and there are often times many other tournaments which will offer more matches at a cheaper price.Dont decide on whether or not you want to get a shiny medal before you compete (I know we ALL like to have a nice gold medal, or even better, one of those championship belts). Keep in mind though that you're a white belt/beginner, so the experience you take from the tournament is much better than any medals you can recieve. You learn alot about yourself when you compete, as well as your jiu jitsu game. $100 is if you preregister for both divisions (gi and no gi). One division on the day of the even is $80 I believe (which is an atrocity). Should you go to compete in the no gi division, you'll find yourself in the novice (less than 6 months exp) lightweight (150-160lbs) division.
Menjo Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Yea good advice, i wouldnt concentrete on a medal it only hinders your progress.(Usually) "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
supergalactic Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 You can save some money if you pre-register.http://grapplers.com/store/midscreen.cfmI think it is a great tournament but depending on where you live it can cost some scratch with travel and food and the cost to compete. But you will face some great fighters. Josh Koscheck the human blanket
Maddwraph Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 its actually $65, and i think ill enter. any tips?> Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
Maddwraph Posted September 10, 2005 Author Posted September 10, 2005 any advice? tomorows the day. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
Adonis Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Just go and compete good luck and its a good learning experience. You win you know your on the right track if you loose thats even better because you know what you need to work on. weather what subs you need to defend, or what more time you need to spend on postion controling or postion escapes. Either way take a video camera and get your self video tapped as well as video tape other matches. Be good for learning and examining your game, your other opponents game and there game in relation to yours. As well as watching other people and seeing diffrent stratgies and goood technique. Good luck to you.
SubGrappler Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Howd you do? What division did you end up fighting in?
Maddwraph Posted September 12, 2005 Author Posted September 12, 2005 turns out it was $80 to get in. its $65, but only if you pre-register. i was going to be in the teens divison, but unfortunately, on the way there,i got lost and ended up in the mens division. i dont know if it would have amde a difference, the guy if faced was probably like 1 or 2 years older. i lost, by an armbar, but he got me in the shoulder. i think i was taped, so ill find out tomororw at my gym. i was really dissapointed at first, because $80 is a lot of money ya know? but i did have fun, the people were really freindly, and got a cool shirt at half off because of a really nice lady there. you learn from mistakes too, and ill try and get better. thanks though guys.
