Rushman, I posted the breaks my school does on page 1 of this thread. I've done breaks up through brown belt, so some experience but not a ton. My TKD school is based on (forgive my spelling here) Ji do kwon and song moon kwon, I beleive. I've only done 1 board on some other hand breaks so far (knife, ridge, palm).

Let me also clarify that as of right now I don't feel ready to break concrete, and won't try it on my own. Maybe in the future, but not until I've trained a bit more.

i have never tried ice but i assume it is more difficult than concrete...concrete is hard but it still hass thousands of little air pockets and a certain degree of brittleness but ice is just solid....no "give" at all ...same for rocks...you shouldnt even consider trying any breaks wood or other materials unless you are properly trained..most of this preperation is in the mental discipline and focus and speed..believe it or not the very thousands of hand conditioning from basic(like pounding a 2x4 with rope wrapped around it) to bizzare (like some idiots shoving thier hands into some hot charcoals and wondering why the skin is falling off..after seeing this in some movie about the shaolin) has very little to do with the actual break..most important factors are speed, focus and follow through..final thought when you hear people say "dont try this at home" you probably shouldnt....

neil; yes i have read your entry on page one......i just wanted to get your personal background.....

taezee's response is very good and good reading.

speed, focus, and follow through plus confidence is needed for the concrete and all breaks.(you must be ready to try).. you may try three pine boards without spacers for practice. remember if using hand techniques, keep you hand very tight and use the proper striking area..(.but not till your ready).

never tried ice slabs..but they seem hard to carry around. like the ones in karate kid movie.

Thanks Rush, Taezee too. May all your breaks be boards and not bones!

heres one definition of breaking techniques.

breaking techniques is a physical demonstration, as well as having mental and philosophical aspects, to measure one's progress in taekwondo. proper form involves ACCURACY,SPEED, POWER, AND FOCUS.

i participated in a demo yesterday....... it had been a while, but after the first board it seemed like it was yesterday.

the breaks i did were with boards in front and back of me:

1) 360 axe kick followed by a reverse side kick.

2) front kick with a step spinning heel kick.

just thought i would reintroduce this subject after such a rush of energy from the demo.

Hey rush, what exactly is the purpose of boardbreaking? I know it's not very difficult to do, so is it more for show? I've never tried it myself, but when someone at our dojo tests for their black belt, they put together a demo involving board breaking - it looks really cool, but is there a practical purpose for it?

yes; the boards made of pine are about the same strength as bones. but rather than go into it again ...please review this thread........it is quite interesting!..............and it can be difficult if your mind set is not right.
