granmasterchen Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 over here in japan, many of the traditional schools (kyokushin karate) are starting to quit teaching kata....they are changing their schools completely over to K1 style tournament fighting.....I think this is very sad, in the coming 20 yrs, if things don't change, much knowledge will be lost That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
b3n Posted August 19, 2005 Author Posted August 19, 2005 y2_sub: Hey, i also like yantsu. What belt are you?granmaster: That is very sad. My Nidan Grading! Bloke Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Mine are Tensho and Sushiho. It will be a great pity if kata are abandoned as there is some much to learn from themOsu! Why is it, when all is said and done, that more is said than done - John Fitzgerald Kennedy
A. Orstrom Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I agree. I will even go so far as to state that if they abandon kata, it is no longer kyokushinkai, regardless of their other curriculum. The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence, but in the mastery of his passions.Alfred, Lord Tennyson
granmasterchen Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 it is very sad to see it happening over here. It is something that is spreading all over Japan, the whole tournament thing.....many schools are dropping their old curriculums, not just kyokushin...numerous karate schools...it's sad to see. The whole art is just drilling some basic kicks and punches, and then full contact K1 style fighting, they have dropped pressure points, kata, beaking, and anything that doesnt have an immediate impact on K1 That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
MadMatt Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I believe Sosai Oyama used to warn against this happening and was very frustrated at dojos not teaching all the aspects of the original syllabus. To focus entirely on tournament fighting greatly reduces the effectiveness of Kyokushin as a martial art as a whole, if that is their desire, then fine but in that case they should not claim to be Kyokushinkai. "Let's Get It On!!!"
MadMatt Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 My favorite kata is skito or skino kata (sorry I don't know how to spell it), but I still have many to learn. Oh well training, training and more training...eventually I'll get there! "Let's Get It On!!!"
b3n Posted August 20, 2005 Author Posted August 20, 2005 MadMatt: Traditionally called Tsuki no Kata, is it the one where the first move is a step backward into kibadachi, gedan berai then punch?
