This Saturday I'm competing in my first full contact competition. The rules are pretty wussy, but that's California for you.

Kicks and punches to the body

Kicks to the legs

Takedowns and grappling allowed, but no striking on the ground

Gear

4oz MMA gloves

Shinguards

Cup

Mouthpiece

I don't expect to win. My jiu-jitsu, especially no gi, isn't even mediocre, and my striking isn't great. I am just gonna work my takedown defense and try to land a few good shots before it goes to the ground.

This tournament is a test. Not a test of skill. Not a test of ability. It's a test of heart.

FIGHT OR DIE.

Not really a full contact tournament if you have to wear pads

You mean like Kyokushin's not really full contact because you can't use hands to the head?

:P I kid, I kid. But just because there are pads, doesn't mean it's not full contact. Amatuer Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing tournaments all use not only gloves, but shinguards (in the case of Muay Thai and Kickboxing, obviously) and headgear. They're still full contact.

Thanks for the wishes of luck.

Hey all, here's what went down:

I dominated the striking completely, within the first 15 seconds I landed a hard spinning back kick right on his chest. I landed a good few roundhouse kicks to the body, one to the head, and a lot of punches to the body. Everything he landed on me was only glancing. Near the end of round 1 he caught one of my roundhouses and took me down. I pulled closed guard, but I wasn't any match for him on the ground. He passed to side mount and tapped me out with a Hammer Lock.

I lost, but I think I did well, and I passed my own "test". I stepped up and did it. There are some pictures (2 from the fight and 1 with a friend of mine who coached me, the first three pictures) at https://www.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Tsypkin

Thanks for all your support!
