Chuck Liddell: Underrated Grappler?

Recommended Posts

Everyone knows Chuck Liddell is the most dominant striker in the UFC. I also happen to think he is an excellent grappler, who simply prefers to stand. His extraordinary ability to defend takedowns and get back to his feet must be a testament to his natural "feel" for grappling. The only time I have ever really seen him on the ground is against one of the best grapplers in the UFC, Jeremy Horn  . Despite his loss, Chuck Liddell showed excellent ground tactics and submission defense (I was suprised to see Chuck playing butterfly guard!). And, that was really early in Chuck's grappling training.

All these fighters (Including Horn) talk about "Well, If I get Chuck on his back, then..." Well,

A. Hardly anyone does get him there, so good luck trying.

B. If you do, you better watch your back.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

I think Couture got him too...but yeah I agree with you on everything else.

Liddell is a very good wrestler and has been doing grapling seince he was in high school and did kempo before that, yes he is a good grapler but i believe his best atrabute is his take down defence without it i dought he would have come as far as he has.

Finally someone sees Liddell's abilities outside his superb stiking.Chuck said in an interveiw before his last fight with Couture he had started training his grappling even more. Also Couture had a time holding Liddell down in their first fight until he got mounted. But I personally don't think Liddell has even shown a twiklin of his ground game.So yes I think he's underrated.

He is a puple belt in BJJ and is supposed to have some nice leg locks.

I understand why people underrate his grappling though. The only time he is on the ground is when he is gassed and getting pounded..so obviously his ground game looks like it sucks. If he isint gassed he just gets up.

I thought I would bump this up due to Liddel's DOMINANCE over Jeremy Horn. Just goes to show that Chuck's striking can take out a top fighter such as jeremy Horn. War Iceman!!!

Chuck Liddel is excellent grappler. His submission ability against top competion he goes against is unkown but regarless of that. He is an outstanding grappler.

Chuck said an interview on spike TV he prefers to use his grappling abiality to stop take downs or to get back up if he does get taken down.

He has proved that in his fights.

Heck even look at mat Hughes he does well on his back also by playing guard.

Matt Hughes is a monster on the ground. he's probably one of my favorite fighters, but Iceman is #1. Im not sure who else they will get to compete against chuck unless they get wanderlei or Quinton Jackson
