self-taught sword kata?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just joined this forum and it sounds like yall know what youre talking about.

Im in university, and my friend has cast me in the lead role of his 4th year film project, with takes place in fuedal japan. My character is required to engage is various sword duels, as well as a kata. the fights im not worried about, we're really aiming for crowd-pleasing action rather than authentic kenjutsu. (before you ask, yes, we are being safe about all of this). Its the kata that im worried about. i dont want to make one up for fear of it looking stupid, so i was wondering if you know of any videos/movies that i can copy one from. ive got about 2 + 1/2 months to perfect it so its ok if its a little advanced.

Also, if you have any tips on basic training and such it would be greatly appreciated. I have access to bokken and metal swords.

I learned some of the Iaido kata from a book. A shihan from Japan taught me a little bit of Iaido, so I borrowed a book from my friend to learn the kata.

What exactly do you want the kata to look like? How long do you want it to be? What type of strikes do you want to do? How much space do you want to use?

read the book of five rings.....translation by stephen f kaufman.....this explains much about swordfighting

the book was originally written by the greatest samurai known as miyamoto musashi

i highly recomend this book, it will explain how to hold the katana properly along with how to fight properly.....the rest you can choriograph

That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger

i think this depends on the type of film it is going to be. If it is going to be a serious and realistic film then it won't neccesarily (have to) look good. on the other hand it is to be a "wow look at this funky dancing around" then check out what the xma guys do with weapons.

i've done a bit of choerographing in my time and the best thing to get ideas from is kali and escrima. Their drills don't take a lot of effort to work a long sword into and there's lots of weapon-to-weapon contact and swinging etc etc.

earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.

don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.

Yeah, some escrima katas are pretty cool and if you want to make it really flashy (provided your flexible enough) you could use your legs to kick away their hand (just make sure you pick up a single stick video instead of double) and you could add in some kicking. It would probably look pretty cool just so long as you do some cool sword swings.
