My bb test ran close to 3 hours .... I remember it like it was yesterday! Sir turns the heat up to 75 (mind you it was summer)... You begin doing every technique ever learned over and over again. Every form forward and backward, spar every black belt for 3 minutes and then the board breaks .... you kick and punch until the quota of boards are broken ... luckily I landed all of mine on the first try .... but it is not unusual to see students stiking their bloodied hands and forearms and heels until the boards snap. It is a grueling feat .... and quite an achievement! We do not have a written test but I am not against that .... I feel many black belts do not know enough about the history, philosophy and terminology of their style.... but if youre gung ho on your style then it should be your responsibility to learn all that you can!

you do not really HAVE to know the terminology and the history of your art.......along with kickboxing i also do canadian style jiu jitsu.......we never use japanese except for "Yemai" and "hujamai"

i dont know how to pronounce that but oh well.......we also gotta memorize the bushido code....not because we have to cuz our art comes from bushido arts but because our Sensei believes that martial artists and non-martial artists should live by it!

terminology is not really neccesary because you are going to be taught in the language of the country you are training in

if you learn jiu jitsu in japan then they will teach you in japanese.......if u learn it in france then they'll teach you in french.....in brazil then they will teach you in portuguese

after all in a one hour class there isnt much time for history and terminology.......people come to learn how to fight and defend themselves......if you want to learn history and terminology then look it up in a book!

You can boo me if you want, You know I'm right!

Hey, YODA,

I had a look. =) That site also contains some good articles.

Can I ask why the other guy failed ?

I thought students weren't asked to grade unless their instructors think they're ready.
