Angus Posted March 10, 2002 Posted March 10, 2002 I need a bit of a hand with some terminologies... This form of freestyle karate i do now is Goju based with boxing, aikido, kickboxing rah rah rah, and we use Japanese terminology. I need to know what the following terms mean: Uchi (snapping strikes) Uraken Ganmen Uraken Hizo Uraken s-h-i-t-o Uraken sayu Uraken shomen Shuto Gamnen Shuto Sukutsu Shuto Naka Shuto sukutsu uchi komi Ate (smashing strikes) Jodan Hiji Ate Chudan Hiji Ate Age Hiji Ate Ushiro Hiji Ate Oroshi Hiji Ate Sorry if it takes some time but thanks for any replies.... I know that shuto is knifehand so the other snapping one must best the backfists but i don't know the particulars. Ta! Karateka Posted March 11, 2002 Posted March 11, 2002 Different styles have different names. Hiji-ate means elbow. Chudan is middle, Age is rising, Jodan is upper, Ushiro is reverse, No idea what oroshi is. Uraken is like uchi, but it is more like a thrust then a snap back. All the other names are either directions or ways to do it. I am sure the others will help you out on this one. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)

SaiFightsMS Posted March 14, 2002 Posted March 14, 2002 I find the Japanese terms escape the memory very quickly if not used on a regular basis. Like when I am working on a kata I don't think turn migi zenkutsu dachi ken migi age uke. I think turn in zenkutsu dachi and head block. My aging memory just isn't retaining the terms very well.
Ryukyu1 Posted March 14, 2002 Posted March 14, 2002 I have a similar problem, think what I'm doing in English and then try to apply the correct terminology..really helps me to screw thinkgs up.
