Shaolin Bushido Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 so if hapkido is so brutal,do most dojangs spar in it?Yeah, to an extent with control. Balls and all; punch to the face without contact ... most of the time. You really have to defend, there's no faux defense like "changing side" so your back is no longer a legal target ... or turning your back and back kicking as you flee the mat or collapse to it.*throws up* Familiarity breeds contempt.
Goju_boi Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 so in other words when Hapkido people spar,it's like watching a mixed martial arts match but with traditional martial arts? https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
tufrthanu Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 The only guys I've known that sparred Hapkido style were excellent at falling. By and large I would think the practice would be frowned upon do to the high probability of severe damage due to moving incorrectly. At my current place we basically do traditional sparring and some of the higher belts can decide if they want to grab legs and trip but thats about it. Of course you must realize the focus in Hapkido is NOT to submit an opponent but to actually break their limbs and cause them pain. Long Live the Fighters!
Goju_boi Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 "Of course you must realize the focus in Hapkido is NOT to submit an opponent but to actually break their limbs and cause them pain."whoa, I wouldn't want to fight a Hapkido person anytime soon https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
tufrthanu Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 Lot its true though goju. I mean some of the techniques you can modify so that there is only pressure. But alot of them require the person to do something to get out of it to avoid injury. Alot like Aikido. Long Live the Fighters!
Goju_boi Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 "Alot like Aikido" well I heard in many places that both Aikido and Hapkido were both developed from Daito Ryu Aikijutsu.I don't know how much truth there is to that. https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
tufrthanu Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 It is true. But after they were developed they went kinda different ways I think. BTW they have the exact same meaning. Aikido in japanese means the same as Hapkido in korean. Long Live the Fighters!

tufrthanu Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Actually Way of Coordinating Internal Power.Do = Way in both instancesKi= internal energy in both instancesHap=AiAi can be translated several ways...love, duty, coordination or harmony as you said. Hap is the same way. So it could also be translated as Way of Harmonizing Ki or Internal Power. Long Live the Fighters!
y2_sub Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I'm curious , is there any form of competition in hapkido (tournaments fighting) ?? Moon might shine upon the innocent and the guilty alike
