Angus
Australia doesn't have any native defensive style probably because we're inhabitted by british convicts primarily (hehe). The aboriginals have a specific style of boomerang throwing but that's about it. Our fighting style would probably be British boxing or something. I know that kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do are big in oz but we don't have a style of our own. Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. niel0092
There was a club for vietnemesse kung fu that practiced in the gym next to our club in college. Vo Lam kung fu. I think that's as close to "native" as it gets but I really don't know for sure. "Jita Kyoei" Mutual Benefit and Welfare
thaiboxerken
Russia has Sambo and R.O.S.S. Sambo is a grappling style that tries to compete against BJJ. R.O.S.S is another new "self-defense system 100% scientific" type of deal. Just kick 'em, they'll understand.- Me Apprentice Instructor under Guro Inosanto in Jun Fan Gung Fu and Filipinno Martial arts.Certified Instructor of Frank Cucci's Linxx system of martial arts. iolair
does any one know if the following places have a self defence style? vietnam africa russiaVietnam: Viet Vo Dao. Don't know much about it beyond the name I'm afraid. From https://www.vietvo.com: "Viet Vo trains in both unarmed fighting and weapons (sword, broadsword and staff). Unarmed fighting techniques include kicks, knees, sweeps, punches, elbows, knife-hands and eagle claws as well as locking and throwing techniques. Due to the physique of the Vietnamese people, small and slim with a smaller bone size, Viet Vo techniques tend to emphasise countering techniques utilising small circular movements." Russia: Sambo, as already mentioned. It has a lot in common with western amateur wrestling. Africa: Lots of indigenous fighting forms, can't think of any formalised ones from the top of my head though! Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
Kirves
Vietnam has a tradition that looks a lot like Taekwondo/Hapkido mixture (lots of high kicks). There are different styles, but in every style I've heard of, they've had the word Vo in there and often either Viet or Vietnam too. I knew one guy who had trained in Vo Vietnam. I've seen a video about African M.A. I believe it was from Unique Publications. The Jeet Kune Do guru Burton Richardson talks and knows about some african arts and teachers too so go see his website or contact him https://www.jkdunlimited.com. vogamo
Of course there are many Viet MAs. Just because you don't know of their existence does not mean they don't exist. There are three general categories of Viet MA in my mind. The kind that originates in Viet Nam and that is mostly and uniquely Vietnamese in character. Then you have MAs with foreign origins that were introduced and became widely practiced in VN (Hapkido, Aikido, TKD, Karate, Shaolin, Wing Chun). And finally you have the hybrids that were started by a Vietnamese, Vovinam/Vietvodao being among others in the third category in my opinion. Regardless of style, any MAs that come from VN or practiced by a VNese has a different flavor to it. It's only recently that some MAs are viewed as sports in VN. Hey, doesn't matter what style you learn, you better learn it well or face the consequences on the streets and during school breaktimes (Yes, I started fighting since first grade and maybe before that and many VNese do the same thing). If your classmates know you take TKD or Kung Fu with a style different from theirs, they will challenge you. If you practice out in the public, someone will try to challenge or humble you . To make things short, if you were going to fight a VNese that learned MA from Vietnam (not here in US), then you should really look out for their knees and elbows, although more elbows than knees. I am too lazy to type further. Use your caution fighting VNese because we usually are not big, so we have to rely on our skills to get ahead of the game. SandanPJ
Sambo is pretty good, I agree it isn't as good as BJJ, but it is worth checking out.
