chh Posted March 11, 2002 Posted March 11, 2002 At our (very small) dojo there aren't scheduled test days when everybody tests, you get tested when Sensei sees you're ready. If nobody else is ready then you test alone. Also, 1 night a week we have an advanced class, which doesn't mean a whole lot since we're pretty much all beginners, but the class is never toned down to the lowest common denominator like the regular classes sometimes are. New people can attend, but either work on more basic stuff or sit out while we focus on advanced techniques & sparring. Anyway, it might be worthwhile to suggest an advanced class to your instructor? I think I learn a lot from watching the beginners' early accomplishments and do not feel like I'm being held back by training with them, but I do highly value that advanced class where we always train hard and learn new things.

So what if you are better than certain other colour belts. Be proud you have progressed so well!! I am Daniel Son you are Mr. Miogi... Wutah! Do unto others, as they done to you.
Ryukyu1 Posted March 13, 2002 Posted March 13, 2002 Our club trains and test juniors and seniors seperatly. Also when somebody new comes in they join the rest of the class in the warm ups and physical although they are told to take it at there own pace. Later on the class is split up and the beginners and white belts are allocated to either a high ranking senior or assistant instructor in order to learn the basics. This prevents higher grades from being held back and also helps those selected higher ranks and assistant instructors with their teaching skills.
