JKDkid2 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 can girls train in shaolin temple and if they can do they have to cut there hair
White Warlock Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Okay, let's clear one little bit up. There are no more shoalin temples. What is going on nowadays in China are 'marketing' manuevers by talented wushu practitioners. Frankly, the Chinese government would not stand for a rebirth of such. fallen_milkman Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Well said. Now, if you had asked WERE girls allowed to train at the Shaolin Temple, yes they were. 36 styles of danger
ovine king Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 No they weren't.Traditionally, the monks and nuns kept apart, both having their own institutions. Ocassionally, one would request to stay at the other's place during travels but only if their own was not available.Traditionally, only men were allowed to study at the temples (unless you were royalty) and only monks were allowed to train there. Those that learnt shaolin outside of the temples were usually rich folk who paid the temples lots of money, conveniently in the form of alms. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
ClA Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 He is right.Women is not allowed to be a ShoaLin Monk, or at least not used to.BUT, there is something called a "Non-buddist student".Cantonese calls it "Jok Ga".These non-buddist students go to the temple to learn kung fu, they are not required to shave their hair. Once they mastered their art, they are allowed to "go down the mountain".But china has changed SO MUCH over the last few years..........i wouldn't be surprised if ShaoLin has become "watered down"...........just like most arts when money gets involved. A lot of monks are trained for performance now, notice people love seeing monks get kick in the nuts?? People pay money to see these things.A lot of Monks are very wealthy now...........some in drives a Benz to "work". People donates BILLIONS of dollars to the temples, and they are pretty much the CEO that handles all that money..........Things changed............china is not like it used to be.In the old days, people fought war against the government, and ShaoLin was where people trains or "hide" from the government. There was a "purpose" to train. People cut their hair to put the past behind them, they even change their names. But now a days, with Kararoke, DVDs, entertainment, big tall buildings, who the hell wants to be a monk and can't touch women for the rest of their lifes??? Can't eat meat???Don't be surprise that they'll allow women to train if you offer enough $$.
fallen_milkman Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 She didn't ask if women could be monks, only if they could train. 36 styles of danger
ovine king Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 the answer is still no. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
Goju_boi Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Well I guess if youre in China but. a school run in my town by shaolin monks lets girls train in all the aspects of kung fu they wish to learn https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
White Warlock Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Umm... no more shaolin monks. There are still 'buddhist monks' that don't practice wushu, wushu practitioners that pose as buddhist monks, and buddhist monks that practice wushu. However, shaolin monks no longer exist, except as a marketing ticket. I think that's the second time i've said this on this thread. Odd, eh?
