MFGQ Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Hi, I have done a lot of MA in my young life, but i wanted to do Kung Fu for a long while, I have looked up for schools in my area and i have found two that are the ones that convince me more, one teaches Hung Gar and the other teaches Wing Tsun, i really don't know that much about them and wanted your advice on which should I study, I am looking for self defense by the way. thanx
stonecrusher69 Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 First thing you should do is go to a book store and check out these two styles.Read and find out as much as you can.Maybe after you do some research you'll have your answer. Both styles are good, but very different.I'm not going to tell you what to study thats up to you to decided.Once you know what you want to study then its important to find a good teacher.Ask questions and talk to a few students if you can.If you like both styles then try both for awahile and see which one you like.Good luck!! http://www.youtube.com/user/sifumcilwrath"When the student is ready the master will appear"
MenteReligieuse Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Both styles concentrate on punches rather than kicks. The hung gar "shadow kick" looks alot like the way kicks are done (with a punch) in wing chun. Hung Gar use more low and deep stances than wing chun, which is more upright. Hung gar also has a few more weapons than wing chun.Thats all I can say for I don't know too much about hung gar so I can't say which is best for self-defense, but this really depends on the training you get anyway. If you can take a free test class in each school you will be able to get a better feel on them both.
KF Dude Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 You need to try out a class & see which one fits you best. Both are good KF systems so you can't go wrong. Do you have any specific questions about Hung-Ga that I can answer for you?
BLueDevil Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 from what what ive seen Wing Chun tends to be more simple and direct while Hung gar is more circular...definatly research, attend a class, and research their lineage. those are really important. There is no teacher but the enemy.
ClA Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I would suggest Wing Chun. I took a few classes in college, pretty fun.
MFGQ Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 I really dont know that much about Hung Gar, i have been told it is a very strong style and doesnt have much kicks, but thats just what i have heard, if anyone has more info on the style it would be great. While i have seen some videos on Wing Tsun and have seen it is a really explosive, very quick with the hands style, but i dont know much on it either. :S
WudangDragon Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 i do a form of hung gar and its really fun, very effective as well, dont know much about wing chun so cant say much about which is the better system.as for hung gar - the style i study in (Lang Jung Kuen(South China Fist)) has a good amount of kicks, but the emphasis is on punches and hand techniques, also speed is more important than power for both kicks and punches. there are blocks, but these blocks usually consist of a diversion block and a counter-attack, rather than a more common or conventional block.hope i helped, tried my best anyway lol "We follow the World,The World follows Heaven,Heaven follows Tao,Tao follows the way things are."
Goju_boi Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 well I don't know if this helps, but in the movie kung-fu hustle, the guy in the beggining that only used punches was a hung gar master. Also if u have ever seen the old school movie the prodigal son, that movie is all about wing chun https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu

I went out and bought Prodigal Son, probably the best representation on Wing Chun to the public. I enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle and I liked that he used Iron rings, and the fact that he was a fairy cracked me up There is no teacher but the enemy.
