Heard of it, but I've never gone to a class so I didn't vote. I dont feel like I can give you an informed opinion. I did try traditional hapkido and I liked that, but it was too expensive at the school I tried.

I think the cost had alot to do with location and the fact that the instructor was only a few years out of Korea. He didn't speak a ton of english, although his senior student did and translated well, so teaching hapkido was his sole source of income. The school was also located in a very affluent suburb of Minneapolis (Minnetonka is a very wealthy community), in a strip mall. Those factors weighed heavily in pricing I'm sure, more so than the style itself.

So how do you like your art?

I love it!

See, where I live, Tang Soo Do is very popular. Their are TSD schools everywhere. I even participated in it when I was very young.

But I wanted to learn hardcore self-defense. I also wanted to train all-out like in judo and BJJ. Finally, I didn't want to do kata. That's not to say they are without value, they are just not for me. If you enjoy them, fine. I eventually found this strange art called "Combat Hapkido." I was totally in love with it after my first class.

Combat Hapkido is a complete martial art., derived from many other martial arts. It teaches:

Punches, Kicks, and Strikes (From boxing, Hapkido, and kickboxing)

Joint manipulations, including throws, locks pins, and holds (Daito Ryu Jiu-jitsu, which forms the basis of traditional hapkido, and Aikido)

Throws and Takedowns (Judo, Hapkido, wrestling, Jiu-jitsu)

Groundfighting (BJJ with nasty tricks)

Trapping (Wing Chun)

Stick, knife, (Filipino MA)

among others...

There are ICHF schools in Zimmerman MN, Andover, and Little Falls. If you are close to any of these schools, I highly suggest you give it a look.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Niel if you are referring to Won Ki Kwon that was in New Hope I beleive. I looked at his site once and I also think he might have had his own deal going. He had hapkido forms and everything which are virtually unknown in other forms.

Yep, that's the one. I didn't see anyone do any of the forms when I checked out the school though.

New Hope, Minnetonka, same difference. Same general area :)

Nice concept but actual execution is weak. At least in my experience. We have a school nearby in California. I think the material/techniques are too few. I would hate to see someone from this school actually try and defend themselves. For most of them it would not be pleasant but that may just be the school.
