It will take you about a month or two of training to learn the outside movements of your first level. Then a couple of more months to learn and understand the inside movements to be ready to test. Now notice that I used the words to "learn and understand." However, I did not use the word "perfect." It takes about a year to actually perfect your first level kata, techniques, and "inside movements."

hi!! ive been practicing shotokan for 8 year!! now... you must take it slow.... in my dojo we grade every 3 months you should spend most of that timee working on your kata!! and as for counting i wouldnt rush into that!! but its all good to learn! if you like i will recod me counting in japanese and send it to you!! i cant send it on here so if you like you can get in tuch with me on my AIM or my msn.

Focus on your training instead of ranks. You'll want to train to be fluid.

Actually, he is no longer affiliated with Itosu-kai. Demura Shihan currently heads his own organization - Shitoryu Karate-do Genbu-kai.

To avoid confusion, "Shihan" is the appropriate title/word to use instead of "Grandmaster".
